Help with narrowing down species for botanical poster.
    #27459673 - 09/07/21 06:50 PM (2 years, 4 months ago)

Hi there, long time lurker, first time making an account and actually posting.

I shared this to the art section of the forum already but it might actually be more relevant in here. I'm new so I don't know my way around all that well yet.

I am an artist and I have been working on a series of botanical posters. So far I have done one for ayahuasca, mescaline containing cacti, and medicinal mushroom species.

The next one I wanted to do was Magic Mushrooms, and for this one I wanted to cover a broad range and include only the most significant psychoactive species from each genus.
I have a tentative list based on some thorough googling but I'm encountering a lot of confusion when it comes to certain genera, especially Gymnopilus.

I know there's some really knowledgable mycologists in here, and if any of you have the time to assist by pointing me in the direction of the most significant species and which ones are even worth including, it would be a huge help.

P.S. I plan to do a completely separate botanical poster later more thoroughly covering the Psilocybe genus by itself, since it obviously has the most variety to work with.

I will include below the species list I have at this point - I'm no expert so I just did my best. I highlighted the ones that seemed the most important to include but I really have no idea, so critique the hell out of it, please!

I'll also attach my medicinal mushroom poster so you can see what direction I am headed in with these upcoming posters. Thanks in advance. You guys are the best. Mush love.

Tentative species list (the ones in purple I was most strongly considering including):

Amanita:
Amanita muscaria, “Fly Agaric”
Amanita pantherina

Psilocybe cubensis, “Golden Teachers”
Psilocybe semilanceata, “Liberty Caps”
Psilocybe cyanescens, “Wavy cap”
Psilocybe azurescens *most potent?*
Psilocybe mexicana

Rare: Psilocybe tampanensis, “magic truffles, philosopher's stone”
Psilocybe zapotecorum
Psilocybe caerulescens, “Derrumbes, Landslide mushrooms”
Rare: Psilocybe caerulipes, "Blue Foot Mushroom"
Rare: Psilocybe stuntzii, “Blue Ringer Mushroom, Stuntz's Blue Legs”

Panaeolus:
Panaeolus cinctulus (aka Panaeolus subbalteatus)
Panaeolus cyanescens (formerly genus Copelandia), “Blue Meanies”

Gymnopilus:
Gymnopilus aeruginosis, “Magic Blue Gym” (Does it exist?)
Gymnopilus luteus, “Yellow Gymnopilus, Laughing Jim”
Gymnopilus luteofolius, “Scaly purple gym”
Gymnopilus junonius, aka spectabilis, “Laughing Gym, Waraitake” *most significant*
Gymnopilus purpuratus *potent* ???
Gymnopilus luteoviridis
