Hey all,  this was from a likely bacterial LC that I put on carbon and  gentamicin agar (though the gentamicin was a bit old). Is the starburst pattern (weak then stronger) a result of it out running contamination, or possibly adapting to a new medium, or both? Thanks!

Edit: there are two pieces because it broke, not for any dumber reason.

I can't say for sure, but I saw the same growth pattern from some of the agar wedges I put to slants. It could be adjustment to a new medium. And next time, you can try to spread a drop of LC around more so bacteria would be more obvious than the mycelia fragments.

The point of testing LC is to see whether it has bacteria. Since you used antibacterial agar, you learned nothing from the test. Do it again on plain agar. Does the charcoal hamper bacteria? If so, skip that as well.

It wasn't a test, it was to clean it up because I thought it was bacterial, but I needed the strain.  I received it from someone.

Regardless of the origin you should make transfers until cultures are clean. But I agree on skipping the amendments.

Hi I'm new and just transferred my first substrate and rye grain mix into the fruiting chamber and fear for lack of experience and greater knowledge that I may have screwed the pooch on my little golden teacher cubes



Is this the start of penicillium? I fear I may have not done the transfer properly and caused the introduction of this new fungal agent into my environment

Can anyone help verify this for me?

anyone have had to battle pesky trich problems in their tubs?

out of 10 or so tubs so far i've had ~3 trich out on me before F1, and 2 to trich out on me before F2.  The subs were 100% colonized for all of the tubs when trich hit.  I know i could be doing better than that. 

idk where to start besides doing a proper floor to ceiling clean up in my space. All my spawn is grown out from clean agar cultures and/or G2G'd from a master jar, which have all been looking clean and growing great so far.  The common consensus seems to be that any trich before F1 points to contaminated spawn, but keep in mind the trich is popping up like 10+ days into fruiting with fully colonized sub. I'm yet to see trich in any of my bags or jars this cycle.

The tric starts white like mycelium.  It's hard to spot without lots of experience. I still get trich on my straw subs after second flush, 3rd if I'm really lucky. Just get a fruit to clone your good. Lots of clean transfers. If you think it's contam give it a week,it'll show itself.

Looks like cobweb mold. Sorry for your loss. The fact that it starts from the bottom makes me think you may have inoculated with it, rather than it slipping in through the threads/filter.

Possibly bacterial contamination in your spawn, which invites trich to grow at any stage. Bacteria is the shoe in the door for a lot of bad shit.

Did I pick up spider mold somehow?? This plate hasn't been opened since the transfer, it looked clean until today. Now It looks like the mycelium is isolating itself off and the corner is filled with cobweb.

Hi so after 3 failed attempts due to obvious contam (my fault for not being sterile) I've got to a stage where I've got them into fruiting conditions. The tubs fruiting on top all the side and all over the bottom :crazy: I'm not too concerned about that but some of the fruits have this wierd splitting on them. I'm guessing it's nota good sign but just hoping one of you experienced guys can tell me if it's a write off or should I just let them grow some look perfectly normal.

I'm not sure what you mean by splitting, and you're not doing yourself any favors by scaling down an image that small, but normally damaged fruits is a symptom of a parasitic infection--pseudomonas or verticillium. But split caps can be due to too low humidity.

Sorry the pics are poor I was struggling to get them on. Its like a split straight across the stem almost like it's been cut with a knife there's 4 like that can't find any images of anything else like it. The rest all look fine though so I'll just isolate the tub and see how it goes with them.

Hey everyone!
I had some struggles with my autoclave and my spawn is a bit overdue.
Most of my bags for multiple strains (king oyster, oysters,  pioppino) have yellowish or orange spots. It looked fine till it was fully colonized and standing for multiple days.

I’ve started from lc -> agar and then either lc -> grain or agar -> grain.

I think my problem is that my spawn is too wet. But I’m not sure if it’s just metabolites or contamination. Really need your help:
