I don't know much about vert. I was just pointing out the reasoning "it doesn't grow in casing therefore it likely doesn't grow on agar" doesn't make much sense if trich and penicillium are suitable examples. Because they don't grow in pure casing but they do grow on agar. Few molds seem to grow on casings, but many grow on agar.

That's a great point BB thank you for pointing that out. My jars are normally 50-66%. Just scoped out your best canopies...wow. goals.

Ora said: Atmoz I found some info on short tubs vs taller and the consensus seems to be taller holds more air so it's easier to dial in FAE so it's more self regulating whereas shorter tubs have less air and a breeze or no breeze can impact the conditions more extremely.
Excellent! That’s a start! Thanks!

I have a dumb question, why do people add nutritional yeast to agar but never to grain or their subs? A quick search didn't turn up a lot on this subject.

The grain doesn't need the nutritional yeast because it already contains nutrients within the grain, agar needs the nutrients to promote growth.

For nutrients. I like the idea of using low nutrient agar tho. The idea being that stronger genetics will grow out on the plate and youll get more explosive growth once it hits grains

Will I be able to print my APE if they open enough or will I need to swab the gills with a sterile qtip?

Albinos don’t drop prints so you’ll have to swab.
Although I did print Avery’s before but it was invisible. PE don’t drop regardless though.

Just made a syringe out of an APEU print to the bottom of a jar.. couldn’t see it unless you shined a light at just the right angle and sparkled into existence lol at least I think that’s what I’m looking at.. I’ll lyk

I thought they were just clear spores, maybe that's you meant though cuz yeah they don't drop visible prints

Some are open enough to print I hope they drop spores even if they are clear . Question: do I swab the gills like turning pages a book or just lightly rub the gills in a circular motion or rub them up and down at a medium pace 😁

Really up to you.. I go up and down the gills the long ways.. I like to just swab on one side.. most do the very tip. I rub the swabs together so it’s hard to do that when it’s at the very tip. It doesn’t take much to get the spores on the swabs.. you want to be gentle and try not to get gill fragments on the swab

ugh, now i'm wondering if I threw away 16 perfectly good avery's albino prints because the spores were clear. Do they still make a visible pattern on foil etc?

I only did a few one time just to see, and if you held it at the right angle you could see the print but I wasn’t sure if it was just water or an impression or something at first. I gave a couple out and both said they had no problems so I guess it’s possible.
I’ve always been told that albinos don’t drop prints. Idk if it’s jusf that they’re clear or if albinos actually have trouble dropping spores too.

From the appearances of my caps the gills are so crowded most of them touch preventing spores from dropping I’m hoping my caps have hit the Sweet Spot ; opened up enough to drop and not long enough to invite contamination. I’ll post a photo if it’s successful. I made sterilized swabs in a screw top test tube , I’ll get em one way or the other .

I took 20 apeu prints because I was told they drop invisible spores .
Did giveaway and I think 2/20 people get germination, everyone else was blank plates.
That's my limited experience. Maybe if the 18/20 swabbed the entire area for spores they could've got it, but I dunno, doubtful.
