Good starting microscope?
    #27456338 - 09/04/21 06:53 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Can some knowledgeable growers help me select a microscope that I can view and identify spore features and common contamination  . I have a modest budget of under 1000 US dollars. I’ve seen units with widely varying features, quality and price . I’d love to go digital. Any suggestions? What’s the minimum level of performance I need ?
Maybe a good place to show & tell I love to see cool tools 🙂

I use the $239 Omax 2000x. The Amscope b100ms is also a good option. Omax and Amscope are owned by the same company, UnitedScope.

Those are good, I would toss the 20x objectives, 10x widefield is better and the extra magnification that the 20x gives is empty magnification - the objects get larger but not any more clear.

If you have more like 1200 to spend, this one looks good:

Swift 380 is also a good inexpensive model.

When professional mycologists who use really expensive scopes at work try an Amscope B120 they are always really surprised how good the image quality is.  It's not as good as a $10k scope with plan achromat objectives, but it's not a whole lot worse.

I never use the 20x eyepieces as the image is just too poor. I've also found that I can use the 4x and 10x objective for most things. They certainly yield the best photos in my experience.

That $1200 looks nice. The Swifts always seem pricey in the second-hand market so I figured they must be pretty good. The dark field would be nice to have.
