Unfortunately nitrogen is useless for shrooms, and this is mainly what fish-style composts are good for. There's also likely to be high levels of potassium and magnesium, which stunt shroom growth when in excess. On the other side you ARE getting heaps of good stuff, though whether it's good for cubensis or not is just guesswork... Try it out, but be prepared for disaster as much as for success IMHO.

I don't agree with you on that. Fungi can't use inorganic nitrogen, which is basically anything that you would buy for your lawn or house plants. However this stuff would add organic nitrogen which is very much need for fungi.

Isn't urea organic nitrogen? I didn't know that organic nitrogen was consumable by fungi. Something to keep in mind. Peace, jat

Nitrogen is useless to shrooms????? I guess I better go reread TMC, I thought it was the most important!

I don't think it would be good for shrooms. Too many ingredients that shrooms do not normally encounter in nature.

If you compare to what ingredients dung or manure contain and the fishcompost, I think you'll find a difference, but used to add to traditional substrates it might help. Why would more ingredients not be good to shrooms, I can only imagine it is good to contaminants, so adding more ingredients would cause contamination to appear more easy. Also, when using grain and flour for substrate you'll have a major carbohydrate source wich is the best for cubies, straw and hay are a source of cellulose wich allows panaeolus to grow. I think all these sources contain protein wich can be broken down to it's building blocks where Nitrogen is one off. So they might need it to grow, but I don't know if Stamets has written something about it. I think I'm gonna buy myself an stamets bible...

Just a wild idea, but how about hydrating useless store bought manure with Neptune?

I thought that store bought manure had pestacides in it, that is why you can't use it. How about hydrating some 50/50+ with this stuff.

It it used as a plant fertilizer. Howerever, it is not specially formulated for plants. This stuff is organic and all of the nutrients macro- and micro- are in a much more utilizable form than inorganic fertilizer. I think that adding this to your substrate or compost would give a big increase in nutrients especially nitrogen and phosphorus.

BTW, I still hate this format..... Anyway, fish emulsion has been proven in scientific studies to increase harvests. Secondly, fungi do in fact need nitrogen. Thirdly, fungi can in fact use organic as well as inorganic nitrogen. Fourthly, urea can be used to grow mushrooms. Yes, you can supplement your spawn with your own pee. I'm serious. Fiftly, I would not add this to a casing, but it could be a great additive to compost or as a supplement to most other substrates. The magnessium count does not seem too high at all. If fish emulsion helps, at worst I would say this stuff would be equal, but it could be a good bit better and it wouldn't stink the way fish emulsion does. It sounds like it'd be a good thing to play with.

Mushies require nitrogen but they can get by with less nitrogen than yeasts and bacteria. Most casings and composts are deficient in nitrogen and this limits the growth of contams. Contams take over if nitrogen levels get too high.

But if you work 'very' sterile, it can be helpfull to causing bigger yields and higher potency! Why would colonised rye get contams when mycelium is surrounding all the rye?? If you have no contams before fruiting I think it can work!

unsterile fish emuls. could work safely outdoor, right? If you're outdoor you don't have to worry about yeasts and bac taking over?
