Go to Mitre10(garden department) or Kings Plant Barn and look for grafting tape, it actually works better than parafilm and gladwrap and it has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

One word. . . GLAD. . .
Cut a roll into the width you need with a super sharp knife. . . The inside surface is sterile. . . It breathes. . . I'm nearly through a 30m roll and it's be been 2 years. . . Real easy to work with, just use it directly off the roll. . .

I forgot to mention before. . . Your old PC may week not be reaching 15psi so you may need to run for longer. . .

Another option is placing dishes in zip lock bags. They're reusable and you can buy sizes to fit individual dishes or up to 15 for large sizes.

Good call, thanks mate. It looks like some grafting tape is also made of parafilm. It's quite a bit cheaper as well.

Right on, thanks mate. I've got an unused roll of Glad branded wrap so I'll give that a try as well as some grafting tape when I can get it.

My pressure cooker gets to about 1.8 psi. There are a few charts on the forum floating about but I'm thinking I'll pressure cook a few jars grains at 1.5x the recommended time for 15 psi cookers just to test things out.

There's no way I'm going to try modifying the thing, safety first, always.

Thanks mate, that's another good idea. They come sterile, too, in the packaging, right?

Do you mean storing them in zip locks without wrapping the petris individually? or as well as wrapping them?

Have any of you guys tried micropore tape to wrap petris? Seems like the residual glue would be a bit of a pain in the butt but maybe that's another option.

Absolute worst case scenario, I'd buy a 38m box of parafilm from aliexpress, there's a fella selling full boxes for just under $45 once you include shipping.

You may notice that my inner hippy keeps bursting forth in this forum, and that I really really don’t like single use plastic, or plastic in general. . .

IMO using ziplocks to keep petri clean, is far more risk than individually wrapping, and far more plastic. . .

I haven’t weighed parafilm/grafting tape and compared with glad, but i’m thinking glad is the lighter (and assumedly lesser eviler). . .

My problem with parafilm, is that it’s designed for lab conditions, which most of us don’t have and requires more contact/handling that a roll of Glad. . .

I had plenty of contamination in the early days, where it appeared my gloved fingers, touching the edge of the petri lid, translated in mould colonies on the edges of my dishes. As your gloved fingers are never sterile, touching the parafilm as you stretch, seems counter intuitive. . .

Results by many disprove my fears, yet I continue. . .

Let us know how grafting tape works. . . If Inski rocks it, it surely must work :-)

@sponglord69 No, you don't wrap them first. Just place in a baggie. You'll want to do this in your SAB or in front of a flow hood. Also wipe down your bags before opening and always make sure they're sealed properly.

@Bobbit I go through thousands of petri's a year and am yet to see any contamination attributed to using zip locks. They're reusable. I had more dishes contaminate when I was using 25mm PE grafting tape.

Good to know. . . Its a shame the petri aren’t reusable. . .

What are your thoughts on glass petris? They're reusable but they'd have to be resterilized.

Just wondering why this thread now has "obsolete" in the title? People still post in it from time-to-time and the info is still valid, no?

Cheers for the tips about reagent bottles from OfficeMax and the grafting tape.

I've used my glass petri dishes several times now. Yes, they have to be re-sterilised, but it beats constantly buying single-use plastic. Because the design doesn't allow them to be sealed easily in parafilm, I just sit the lids loosely on top and haven't experienced any more contams than the disposable ones sealed with tape.

I switched it to obselete as the OP isn't being updated any more 😕

I sterilise my glass petri with my agar . . . Then pour as normal. . .

I still wrap with Glad, just make sure your roll is wide enough as it can slip off when not wide enough and stretched too tightly. . .

wassup peeps
Having a bit of an issue re: woodchips for outdoor beds.

I took a bunch of spore prints of a big subaeruginosa haul I got a while back (see last seasons hunting thread) and succesfully got about 25-30 agar dishes fully colonised with thick fluffy white myc.

I proceeded to cut these into 1cm sqaures and layer a grid every few cm in amongst each inch of depth of red Tui brand woodchips from mitre10 (which had been soaking in water for a month) in plastic containers and jars at a steady 20 degrees C regularly remoistening - a common theme seemed to occur in that the myc would jump fairly quickly onto the surrounding chip in the space of a week or so then just...stop except for some really thin tendrils spreading further.
none showed any further growth after 3 weeks from that point.

I tried mixing with some sawdust as a more readily available source and combining the smaller tubs into larger containers but the myc just completely disappeared and a lot grew cobweb even with lots of FAE.

I attempted intdroducing fresh cuts of colonised agar from some more dishes that had been growing in the meantime but the agar chunks just turned to mush and i flipped one over after a day to see dozens of tiny bugs apparently eating the myc.

I am kind of forced to conclude that these supposedly 'all natural' chips may contain something inhibiting growth? Has anyone here used these?

I have recently had MUCH more success in getting lots of LC going - due to a decimal error in preparing my first batch I have a strain which is absolutley thriving on 0.4% honey and now on a few jars of rye grain showing much better colonisation after 9 days than any of the first few batches of agar/woodchip did after months.

I have just tried pouring a few full 250ml jars of this LC onto the larger containers of chip/sawdust mix and hoping to see some growth in the next couple of weeks from what Im hoping is a much more agressive strain.

But I would appreciate a pointer for a solid alternative for when I want to move to bulk/actually digging in some beds as those red chip are all i could find wandering the garden sections of both bunnings and mitre10 apart from the much MUCH more expensive alder, apple etc for BBQ smoking.

Also just putting it out there that Im pretty keen to get some spore prints of P. Alutacea and cubensis to try some indoor cultivation - will happily trade syringes of this aggressive Sub strain and I also have half a dozen Semilanceata prints.

My assumption would be that the woodchips may be pine and too fresh to support my growth and pine is pretty antifungal. . .

I've heard of success with spore water to pine, which may allow for leaching of antifungals prior to gemination?

I've tried LC to poplar wood chips though the poplar was half decomposed and the LC (my first) way less than ideal. . . I ended up using rye spawn as the LC didn't do anything. . .

I managed fruits in my garden the last two seasons via brf cakes with eucalyptus and poplar (6 of each) which also provided the base for growing subs in a tub. . .

Please keep us posted. . . I made my first 'Official NZ' thread for woodlovers Official New Zealand woodlovers grow thread

ah great stuff - Ill put my photos of the various stages ive been through so far up there when I get the chance.
I read through every outdoor woodlover/ sub grow log I could find before embarking on this project and saw that Olive had had great success with pine (both plain and red stained) over in Aus which is why I was a bit stumped.

Decided to go for the 23qt presto. Bod says it can fit 10 1 qt jars!!

What do you guys use for lids? I'm thinking polyfill might be the easiest option.

Finding SFDs or plastic pp5 lids for jars is proving difficult :\

You won't regret your purchase! A decent PC makes the world of difference. . .

You'll find that Agee/perfit jars will only fit 9. . . If you figure out a way of making 10 fit, please do show. . .

Polyfill works well. . . Bods tek is ready to follow and works. . .

You can find pp5 lids on trademe this guy's had many sized auctions. . . These PC fine. . . And I've heard of some using for unmodded lids. . .

Personally I use SFD siliconed on. . . Use poly until you get some sfd's, and cover the hole . . . Just roughen the surface before applying silicone as all the manufacturers of silicone I spoke to said their silicone wouldn't sick to pp5. . .

Thanks Bobbit. I'll get some of those lids.

I ended up getting the 16 qt cooker because the 23 qt was out of stock. It should still be able to fit 7 quart jars in it, which is plenty.

Where did you get the SFD from?

Where do you get a good spray bottle in New Zealand, which is also resistant to isopropyl? My Mitre 10 spray pump bottles keep getting the pump dissolved or something, after a few months. I guess the iso or ethanol attacks the parts inside.

I'm using a continuous mist spray bottle. I haven't used it for very long though, so it may face the same issue.

You can get them on trademe or from hairdressing supply websites.

Are you diluting your iso/ethanol to make a 70% iso/eth and 30% water mix?
