Very thick shrooms: they refuse to air dry!

So, I never thought I'd have this problem. In the past I've only grown Golden Teachers, and after about 24 hours of drying them with a fan they'd be pretty shriveled up, and after 48 hours I'd put them in a plastic box with a strong dissectant and they'd be cracker dry the next day.
I'm currently growing B+ and these guys are THICK. Thick, noticeably heavy and seem to be less hollow than the Golden Teachers.
I've harvested a bunch and I've had a fan pointed at them for 48 hours now, with the shrooms lying on ultra absorbant paper towels, like I always do. But after 48 hours they have barely dried, I haven't weighed them but they look almost the same as when I harvested them!
I'm afraid they're going to rot or something.. should I just throw them in with the Dissectant? I use semi-sealed bags of 75g Calciumchloride to make them cracker dry and I have enough dissectant to absorb all the moisture. I did read a post saying you shouldn't do this because it will dry them "the wrong way" but I have no idea what this means.
Or what if I cut them open? Would that air dry them faster without harming them?
Please don't tell me to get a dehydrator, that's out of my budget at this moment. They start at like $75 where I live.

If they're significantly thicker then they will take longer to dry, yes. Especially with a fan alone.
Split them in half down the middle. I do this with all big fruits that don't fit in the dehydrator shelves.

Perhaps order a dehydrator online?
Cutting them in half is a good idea. Also, use a heat lamp or large incandescent bulb inside a desk lamp to dry them using light/low heat.

Lay them on tin foil not paper towels. Paper towels can absorb water from your shrooms and cause them to become less potent.

I'll cut them, thanks guys
I've never heard about paper towels causing lost potency..? Absorbing water from the shrooms is wat we want, no? I feel like they'd take even longer to dry on tin foil.

Stick those thangs on a pizza pan with holes or foil with some puncture holes, put them on an oven rack, put on Warm/200ish, and crack the door like 6" or so - with a fan running close enough to the opening to circulate air but not disperse all the heat. I reccomend doing this every time until you get a dehydrator. Moisture is sneaky. You need heat plus circulation to properly dry mush. Quality will inevitably be compromised without.

I've gotten mouldy shrooms from bags and foil. Paper towel will not cause loss in potency AFAIK? I've always put them in the fridge between paper towel when I'm dehydrating later and they keep way better. Whole point of preservation is to remove the water, when they're made up of what like 70% of it lol.

Its cause the water inside the shrooms contains psilocybin and psilocin therefore you dont want to dry them that way. For example, if u squeeze the water/juice out of a shroom, that water/juice will be psychoactive.

I'm sure you could find a used one for cheaper. Mine was only $25 brand new so I have a hard time believing that. You used $$ so i assume you're in the states, amazon has them for way cheaper than $75. Investing in a dehyrdrator is just as important as any other tool you use for cultivation.
In saying that, when I was waiting for mine in the mail, I used to split them down the middle starting at the cap and leave a tiny bit at the end of the stems. I would hang em from a wire shelf I have and put a couple fans on em, worked well enou. Tedious and annoying and didnt always work depending on the humidity in my room at the time.

Yea, at the end of the day I really believe a dehydrator is a 100% necessary investment for this hobby

are you guys sure about this paper towel reducing potency, doesnt sound right.
the paper towel would just absorb any moisture the shroom sweats out. just like in your dehydrator whatever water is sweat out and carried off is normal. its not like the surface of a dried shroom is where all the actives are located since the water left from the surface.

So about this paper towel thing, I think LC is making a distinction between mechanically removing the water, which would still hold whatever was dissolved in it, and evaporating the water, which would leave the solutes behind. This is basically how distillation works. Who knows how much of the actives is dissolved in that water, though.

If you press the juices out it makes sense, but laying fruits on a paper towel and losing potency doesnt

it does because it's directly sucking the infused moisture from the fruit, it isn't being evaporated off. the dry paper towel will have leached active compounds.

That's kind of mind boggling but actually makes sense. I wouldn't have thought that but I can see that being an issue.
Food dehydrator for the win.

Exactly. The paper towels are leaching the active water from the fruits via capillary action. Im sure the lost in potency is minimal but still, not a good idea to use that method. Drying via a dehydrator is a much better method.

I'm not sure if this makes sense.. You're saying there's Psilocybin in the water that is transferred to the paper towel. But, the paper towels don't turn blue even though Psylocybin turns blue when exposed to oxygen. Also, most moisture is lost to evaporation and not the paper towel. The towel is mostly there to provide a dry, breathable surface for faster drying.
I'm inclined to believe that any potency lost would be less than 5%, possible less than 1%. I put over 100gr fresh shrooms on a single paper towel, unless my paper towels turn blue like the shrooms themselves I'm not worried tbh. There's not even a stain on them, white as always. I've always dried my shrooms on paper towels and 3 grams gives me a very strong trip every time.
With tin foil I'd be worried about mold and very slow drying, especially with these thick mushrooms.
Btw, update.. After cutting the shrooms they dried a bit more overnight and I put them in a small box with dissectant, they're now cracker dry. Still quite meaty, I'm honestly impressed. Never had such large yields before.

I mean, I wouldn't suggest tin foil. A rack or something similar would have better airflow all around the fruit. I didn't say it's leeching a lot, but it's leeching some, I doubt it's anywhere near 5% either.
