Don't pack it down, that will alter your water ratio.

But you can pack the water down.

Just tamp it on a counter lightly. It won't pack it down, but it also won't be too loose. I noticed that when jars weren't slightly packed, the verm layer fell all down the sides of the jars.(I used a pc to autoclave, and this could be the reason for the verm being everywhere.)

I feel cheated, where can I get the stuff that makes eggs look like brains?
