Got new tool. Had 2 made. Gave one to my mentor. It's the middle agar punch. I have a friend who makes the agar punches (they were his 1st 2., and dab tools.
The extended scalpel - mentor makes Long agar punch - new friend just made me 2 Little agar punch- an online guy who hasnt made them anymore.

PM me if you want more details.
I tore the transfer with my scalpel. The agar was thin. The tools work great and long so you dont need to get close to the plates.

I used real SFD's. They are thick and they are hydrophobic.
I got quite a few failures through them, but I won't rule out crappy technique when gluing them down with rtv silicone. I used the ones from a Shroomery sponsor that are supposedly manufactured the size of a quarter.
I switched to the Amazon ones 128 for 10 bucks and they're working better for me. They aren't similar to real SFD though, they are paper thin. They are hydrophobic and worked fine without foil for me.

Nice tools your buddy made! I always thought the straight punch lent itself to putting your hands over the plate… what about a “T” (on its side) shaped punch that’s open on both ends of the top of the T… that way you could just push a rod through the top to pop the tissue out.. or maybe even more like an “L” so your hands don’t go over the plate.
Idk, seems like something that might have already been suggested somewhere haha

I constructed this safety goggles today so I don't have to strain my eyes so much since I've never used a microscope in my life until two days ago. The light is sometimes Overwhelmingly intense and at times I can feel it physically in my eyes so I'll actually stop using this thing completely for today until I confirm tomorrow that I haven't fucked up my eyes or anything like that lol. I don't even know if it's safe to use a 'transmitted light microscope' this many hours in two days that I've been using it but I'm sure it's not dangerous but just to be on the safe side.
Someone forgot these 'Prada' goggles at my place a very long time ago and hasn't claimed them and since I'm not a sunglasses guy they don't mean shit to me. I just hope no one shows up to ask for them in the future, sure I'll look after your shades for a few months but if no one claims them after 6 months then shame on you I guess more than on me

i never have to push the agar out. it doesnt stick inside normally. just makes the hole and use a scalpel to grap it out of the plate and transfer it. i think the punch is hot enough that it still slides out. i cool mine with like 3 dips in to the receiving plate then make the punch into the culture. it normally just stays inside its home. then i get a scalpel and pick it up and move it to the plate i used to cool the punch. easy peasy. specially when you make 4 or 5 punches real quick in the donor plate.

I think my agar was very hard but the last time I used the punch it looked like all the mycelium in the circle disappeared, so i just used the scalpel.

Trying out this triple cleaned oats today. Hydrated 36 quarts this morning. These 3 quart scoops make things so much easier than using quart jars to fill bags.

Yeah, that's happened to me a few times. It's definitely because it's still too hot. I like doing what others here do, with punching into a sacrificial clean dish beforehand. (Just be sure to swap it out occasionally.)

yeah, I'm afraid to keep using the same cooling agar plate, that's why I just cool it into the next receiving plate, then next transfer , cool it into the NEXT receiving plate. i have used just one like 20x, but that was only once or twice when i first started using the tool.

If I'm doing just a couple of plates, that's how I do it. It varies though. It's more of a mood thing for me.

you can use metal straws that are angled at 45 degrees if you want to avoid hovering over the plate. they come like this i mean. or you could bend it i guess.

Yeh it's made locally, I considered the 40L but I don't need the extra size currently.
