Do you guys do anything to get iso under the lip of lid into first thread before inoculating? I saw a YouTube video where someone squirted iso under the lid with a squirt bottle and wondered if it was standard practice.

Nope.
That high up should be sterile it seems like. If it is then using iso would actually be riskier than leaving it alone.

hey, quick question for y’all who use WBS. i’ve been trying to nail down why my spawn has been bacterial & the only thing i can think of right now is that my oats are causing it. all agar looks clean & i even made some PF pucks josex style to try to get rid of it. all my oats end up bacterial after a shake, so i’m switching to WBS to see if i have any better luck. i let them dry for about an hour outdoors on an old window screen, & prepped them a la crackatoa’s oat prep (says it works for WBS too).
my long winded question here is: is it ok for the WBS to stick to the sides of the jar? i PC’d them last night & today there are grains sticking to the upper parts of the jars/lids. they didn’t seem overly wet when i loaded them & the grains shake freely with no clumping. just wanted to know if i fucked myself on these jars not drying enough or something before i noc them up

I’ve never used oats only wbs, but if all your stuff is clean then maybe the oats weren’t sterilized completely??
They’re bigger so I know that makes it tougher especially if not thoroughly hydrated.

that’s what i’m thinking, it’s just bizarre to me as i’ve followed oat prep teks to the t (bod’s & crackatoa’s) & i always pressure cooker for 2 hours doing grains. i’ve tried loading them moist, ive tried drying them the fuck out, PF plates & the whole 9. seems like every oat jar i have goes bacterial. i guess there’s always the chance i’m not properly running my PC, but my jars never contam with anything else & my agar plates never contam on their own either so i think i’m running pressure properly. i just decided to change it up & go with WBS. i didn’t remove the floaters but it doesn’t seem like you really have to based on the posts i searched

Hi Shroomery.
I tried to get fancy with a thick casing layer and my shoebox is pinning below the layer (1 inch thick) lol.

Should I just leave it alone and let it ride?
Thanks in advance!

Let it ride, no need to fuck with it. Did you apply at spawning? You shouldn't have pins forming underneath the layer and it looks dry.
It doesn't look like you leveled it or compressed it with a trowel either.

Hi p9! Yes the casing was applied at spawning. I went quite a bit under field capacity due to questionable spawn.
You're right. I tried to level it best with gloved hands and the bottom of a shoebox but that didn't work- it looks really bad in the photo.
I've read in your thread that leveled and compression equals win in your thread.
I should just get a trowel.
Thanks for everything!

I just took out some water I pced with my grain for LI and there's these rainbow flakes floating in the water. Is that just hardened minerals or something? The glass doesn't seem cracked or anything.

So I should add a Caveat to my thread that this particular method is for clean spawn only, that would account for all of the trouble you're having there.
Too much substrate and not enough water combined with potentially bacterial spawn. When dealing with iffy spawn keep the h20 to a min (as you've done) and keep the spawn to sub ratio high to prevent runaway issues with the bacteria.

It's all good here! I'm stoked on all your contributions as I'd rather learn things the right way. Thank you!
I have another shoebox spawned the same day and it seems to be riding along normally for now.
Only thing different about this box is that I didn't break the grains up really well.
I just find the humor in it all when stuff goes wonky.

eh, not super. i rinsed it with a pretty heavy stream of hot water awhile back & a paper towel doesn’t really bring up much dirt, though. but it’s allegedly getting sterile in the PC so i don’t see why that would be an issue. also, most of my oats were dried in a strainer, i’ve only used the window screen here & there (i did for my wbs)

Am I right in thinking properly venting your PC is when you can visibly see a consistent flow of steam where you'd add the weight?
New electric stove SUCKS
Going to have to get a propane burner

My gauge goes up to 5psi then I put the weight on. 15-20min steam is always visible during that time.
Only for grains tho. Liquids I dont vent. Takes longer to vent than it does to sterilize the media fuck that

My gauge has never moved an inch until the weight is on lol
I'm only asking as I have been using a gastop stove up until this point. Steam would come in bursts, very visible and then streams of air.. repeating between the two until all air is gone and it is only a stream of steam. That's when I'd put the weight on.
Now, I've moved and am using an electric stove. No visible steam no matter how long I run it. Just steam and air, but not the bursts, all just mixed in one stream.
I think I'm gonna have to grow a pair of balls and put a propane burner on a fire proof mat by the window.
