I'd trade anyone willing to send me a swab for an edible culture. The swab that I purchased from the original vendor was a regular cube.

First time growing anything from a swab. The plates I just swiped did nothing, I even went so hard as to rip the agar a bit, but the one I jammed the swab into germinated and I got a couple transfers off that 2 days ago. They look to be growing!
Dear lord let these work out.

Yeah streaking swabs usually only works if they’re fresh.
Or like they’re talking about in the other thread, dip it in sterile water first to loosen it up before streaking.
Or cut some fibers off and jam them in the plate.

I saw that in the other thread, if only I had seen that a couple weeks ago! I will try those tips next time I go from a swab. Looks like these guys are growing either way, a bit bigger than when I took the pic.

Can somebody link the "other thread" I could use help getting spores to germinate from swabs. I've had mixed results and the only way I've made it work is using softer agar and combining the streak method with the clipping off the head method.

I've had great success germinating swabs by putting a drop of sterilized water on the swab then streaking. I just put water in a syringe, sterilize it in the pressure cooker then put a drop on the swab right before I streak it.
Has worked great for me.

Buddaking's Melmak TP

Going to clone that huge one in the center and then one of the clusters.
I have a few more tubs lagging behind this one. Hopefully some better clusters in those...
This has been fun.

All cubensis should be "cased" which is an outdated and improper term to use in regards to growing cubensis. This isn't an answer to your questions, but its of my opinion that you should be applying a top layer to every cubensis grow you do.

I don't think so, at least I don't recall seeing any mel blobs. I've grown maybe 2 dozen Thick Penis tubs, all with a top layer. not a single sign of blobbing. My only advice for melmac, is that they suck up more water than normal fruits, so add a pint of water halfway through fruiting. some people bottom water, I just pour it over the top of the substrate, seems to work just fine. the extra water will help you get the full yield from your first flush.

They lile a low spawn to sub ratio too. Mainly for tge extra water as far as I can tell
Tgey do great in bags with no toplayer.
As far as im concerned a casing is a toplayer. There are many types of casings, peat, straw, coir. If it goes on top and serves the purpose of a casing (microclimate, water retention, ect...) than it is one
