Going out of town
    #2743762 - 05/29/04 10:16 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

for two days for some concerts at the end of June. My shrooms should be fruiting by then, so what should I do about fanning them? I've already ruled out bringing them along or asking a friend to do it. Could I leave the lid open a bit? Will the loss of humidity for 48 hours be that detrimental? Any suggestions? Thanks!

As long as the temps don't get to high, they will survive the 48 hrs. Are you just starting today or something?

First, are you talking cakes or casings? Casings can get away with just a plastic sheet with holes poked in it for air exchange. Depending on your fruiting chamber, maybe cut some small holes near the bottom (CO2 is heavy) and cover them with tyvek "donated" from your local post office in the form of express mail envelopes. Make sure you have plenty of humidity, add water to the perlite if applicable. If you are using casings, make sure to mist the layer good before leaving. Cakes may be a little more problematic. They require greater humidity levels than casings in order to produce good sized fruits (most of the time) so open air exchanges may not be a good idea. You could also try dunking cakes if that applies. That may offset the greatly increased airflow around the cakes. I would think that 2 days without air wouldn't be that bad. Lets hope.

More details: I am using cakes, which were injected 3 weeks ago and should be ready for their first dunk on Monday. I plan on dunking and rolling after each flush.

So Aeon, you're suggesting leaving the lid on and hoping for the best?

Why dont you just use some computer fans, cut the wires on them, and connect them to a power plug of low power you dont need anymore, and hook the plug in to a timer? That way, you can have the fans turn on and off on a time, like an hour everyday or something, and an input and output fan directly across from it.

Thanks d1, but I'm not that crafty with electronics. I appreciate your response though.

Another question: What's the worst that can happen during the 48 hours I'll be gone? Even if every mushroom growing at the time goes bad once I get home, can I just dunk and roll again and expect normal mushrooms?

Well they shouldn't all go bad in the 48 hrs.

Yeah, you can redunk a cake and the shrooms will be normal. A fish tank pump, jar of water and airstone will handle the airexchange prob.

My cats got a dozen jars goin right now, they're colonizing real fast. He plans on starting a dozen more through jar to jar mycelium transfer. To the point - hes going to Bonnaroo, a music festival in manchester, on June 11-13 ... today May 30 was the 25th day after innoculation and at the rate they're moving they may be ready to case before bonnaroo. This doesn't pose much a problem though seeing as he leaves the casing trays covered for about a week. Last year bonnaroo cut him kinda short - had to harvest early the day of bonnaroo, and tried takin the trays with him but neglected them.
