CO2-smell?!?
    #2743669 - 05/29/04 07:44 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey there...
This is just to calm myself that nothing is going wrong... whenever I air out my terrarium the air inside it seems to have developed a sent... I just want to make sure if this is normal and probably due to the built up CO2 and not because of contamination.. is this normal or not? Or does any kind of sent mean bacteria?!??!

What's it smell like? CO2 doesn't have an odor at the concentrations we're talking about, and mycelium smells earthy and pleasant.

Well earthy and pleasant might be it...
The thing is its not necesairily a bad smell. I don't know what it is... when I take of the plastic bag I have taped onto my cool box the air inside it just smells. Not bad but defintetly strongly of something or other... it smells sort of fresh and a bit sweet perhaps.

When I put the cakes in they didn't smell like anything I just lifted them up and they all have this smell not to mention that if I leave the lid on for about an hour the whole box smells like this...
Damnit I have a feeling this musst be more bacteria.. what can I do so that it doesn't come again?!?!? This would be the second bunch of cakes in a row I lost to bacteria... I sterlized the perlite in an oven and cleaned the cool box out thouroughly (taking it a part and everything) but it seems something got back in it.. what to do?

After I fan the air out the inside just smells like wet perlite dust and plastic.. haha. Could it be the humidity that is distributing the mycelium smell or is this definetly not normal..!??!

I wouldn't worry. It sounds like normal mycelium smell.

Yea probably mycelium. Smell a cake, and see if its the same smell. It should smell a lot like fresh mushrooms.

hey did you put a little peroxide in your perlite?
sometimes perlite gets a little smelly
if this happens I put a few OZs of peroxide in it and it clears things up and its a good idea to put some in when you first hydrate you perlite

NO I didn't use H2O2... but after taking the cakes out of the dunk today (been in for about 12 and a half hours) they smellt more like fresh mushrooms than anything else.. I am confident that things are going well.. now I just need to get these babies to grow!!!
