Yoo welcome back, P Man!
Made 16 QTs of spawn knocked up with some PE agar yesterday to give this tek another shot. Im gonna rob Sally to pay Pete this time. AKA, Im going to shift the bottom sub ratio and move more to the top layer. Improvise, adapt, and overcome.
4 monos I think is a better test run than the first single one I made. Im on flush 2 and things are groovy, though expected with flush 2 in regards to blobs/mutants.
Glad youre back man, dont let the newbies or the peasants get to ya

I wish… probably got at least another week on that.. I did a lined one at the same time as that above one and it’s already poking through the surface a bit. I always forget how bad the waiting is in the beginning.. I keep starting new projects that I shouldn’t be starting. The waiting is almost as bad as waiting for your 30 days to end lol. Glad you’re back

I would like to add that although this tek yields fantastic results, there does seem to be a correlation with substrate compression and pin times. I've noticed that when I heavily compress both my spawn layer and top layer, it will take upwards of 3 weeks AFTER full colonization has been reached for pinning to occur.
I'm thinking the mycelium is simply taking longer to consolidate due to the tightly packed nature of the sub conditions. Next tub I may consider "tamping down" my substrate layers rather than tightly compressing in order to see if pin times are improved.
I'll report back with results.

Interesting thread. I’ve long used a thicker top layer than most prescribe and while I can’t say I’ve noticed it helping with SWPE blobs, I’ve also not struggled with them quite as much. Sometimes they don’t blob and sometimes they do. If I ever get back in the game I’ll give it a try.
So far there is only one variable IME that consistently prevents blobs 100%. But I do want to try this.

Unbroken colony. Brf cakes never blob. Neither do v tek or Kramer cakes or even agar plates for that matter. If anyone has legit PE blobs on those I’d like to see em.

Pasty is the reason this method was even developed in the first place.
I went through pasty' posts with a fine tooth comb, he's the one that set the metric/standard for culture efficiency that I strive to maintain, and he was the og of the canna lobe, 3 liters verm to 5 liters of h20....I simply gave it a p9 tweak by compressing the sub and adding a mega thick top layer out of necessity because fuck prepping that much casing, lol.
I've read many times in the boards that we stand on the shoulders of giants, no truer statement to be found on the shroomery.
Good to see you around, pasty.

Heres my last ape tub.

Compressed sub and a decent top layer also firmly compressed. No blobs. No side pins

I can do much better. Put clones to grains and got 4 more tubs coming along.
Hurray for top layers

Did it take forever? I have a APE tub from 9/8 with a firmly compressed and top layered sub that is just growing pins.
