Two AA+ shoeboxes 6 days in. It's definitely growing differently through the compressed top layer than I've seen with loose ones. One tub has a little starting to colonize the top.

Looking good.
Are you putting in an FC or dub?

I was thinking about trying both to compare? One dubbed, one in a sweater box. Not that I expect them to behave much differently.

Its taken longer to colonize the shoeboxes, though expected with how much more sub I put in them. Top coir started to go light in color on me so I gave it a mist. Top layer is about 90% colonized; almost time.
PE mono has some surface mycelium Im not really liking the look of, but letting ride. Finished colonizing the top yesterday, will update once things start pinning.

Have 4 shoes I made with a 5:1 and a thick top layer
2 different PEs still look like they are going to blob. Too early to tell.
Rusty white has the best pin set I have seen from this culture so far.
APEU hasn’t fully colonized the top but is beginning to pin. This culture usually grows aborts at the beginning then huge clusters on the edges of the tubs. So far the pin set looks healthier then it ever did.

My PE mono is blobbin' and my Huaultas pinned at 90% top layer colonization. Huge amount of side pins too (i skipped the liner to try P9s method of shake and bake aka pour your spawn/sub in, close the lid, and shake it).
Not sure what variable to alter. Tighter packing? Looser packing down? More sub for top layer?
Im only using coir, could that mess things up when packing the layers down?

How thick a top layer? Also, what stage did you top it?

Top layer was maybe 1/2" to 3/4" thick. About 4 to 5 quarts worth.
Topped at spawn, just like in the tek.
I think Im going to try reduce sub when mixing the grains in, and implement a thicker top layer.

Reporting results:
Huaultas pinned hard like a motherfucker, started off great before 80% aborted. Im gonna try this again but with a liner and place them inside a mono with micropore taped holes. Im using reg shoeboxes without latches, so I think mine just had too much passive FAE which dried the top layer, which already required longer times to colonize than usual due to the tek.
PE mono is interesting. Im 60% blobs, 40% normal fruits first flush. So, not a total failure. Im going to try this again and add another 2-4 quarts of sub into that top layer.

Yeah, the tek calls for a 2" compressed top layer for PE, and 1" on all other cube varieties.

Well then. It fuckin works for nats, which are the #1 blob king supreme mamajammas.
I still think blobbing is just the network looking for more water or just to expand more. Seems like when you give blobbers the substrate, more and/or larger fruits show up.

Welp, I think I fucked up.
I used this tek - did 4:1 sub:spawn with another quart of sub as a top layer with APE spawn.
I was trying to do a comparison between a vendor manure-based substrate and straight coir.
I forgot that a. the substrate was sterilized not pasteurized from the vendor and b. with manure speed and aggression are paramount - otherwise competitors are gonna take over.
5 days later and I see the first speck of green on the surface, long before the mycelium started to come to the top layer.

Bummer, karrion.
I’m givin er a try!
Split 1 quart of spawn between two 8 cup containers.. the left one has a liner and a little bit more than the non-liner right one.

I've lost track of how many flushes my two shoeboxes with this tek have given me. A pretty full one will come in, then one with a few chonkers, then another pretty full one. It's honestly ridiculous. I haven't soaked or anything, just a spray down after harvest. All that extra water be helping!
