I personally judge genetics by efficiency(speed, yield, potency, and aesthetic not in any order) the greater each one of those are the higher the rating overall I give it.

To answer your question I would rather do none of those things, instead spend my time working on the genetic and cloning to get to a point where blobs don't happen. I use coir as well so pasteurizing is not a concern. The PE I run is blob free without doing any of these things, I realize that's not the case for people running MS always, but in that case I would take the approach of making sure surface conditions are met, if that means a thick casing so be it, but more importantly cloning away from fruit that has blob tendencies, then you won't have to do any of that, and a good way to do that is to put it in normal fruiting conditions so you can make the differentiation

Well, thanks for dropping in to let us all know you'd rather not use this method because you have your own method, great contribution.

Lets move on from this.

Ive recently started compressing my shoeboxes and like the results too. Pretty even growth although it looked like the mycelium didn't spread as much below the casing layer. Thought it had stalled until I saw it poking up above the casing.

I used a 1:1 mix and a .5 casing layer. Might make it a little thicker and heavier on the coir like you do and see how it turns out.

Good stuff as always bro :takingnotes:

Have you considered a lower spawn ratio? May I ask why you run with 1:1?

I've always followed Sharperdreamings shoebox tek. 1:1.5 is recommended here, with the .5 being for the casing.

To be completely honest I've never given much thought to it or experimented much. Willing to give your suggestion a go on my next run of boxes though.

I'd definitely increase your substrate to spawn ratio, 1:1 isn't very efficient.

I have some jars that will be ready within a week. I'm gonna try this tek. It just SEEMS logical to me, and I see the results you get!

Would you think it would be a big downside to dubtub with this tek instead of putting them in a bigger tub? I only have one big tub.

Awesome write up man! Your 3:1 spawn / sub ratio monos in the first pictures look as good as my 1:1’s and is making me rethink my approach. Been having a few issues since upping my ratio last run with no noticeable increase in yield. Thicker sub and less spawn might be the answer and I’m going to give this a shot.

A couple questions for you… When you use a mono are you also starting it in a smaller box for colonizing? And how long would you say it usually takes to colonize?

Thanks p9 :takingnotes:

My monos are 66qt sterilites.

My ratios are not 3:1. The first number is usually spawn and the second is substrate, even when inverted its still not quite right, but that's OK:

My shoeboxes are 1 qt spawn to 6 quarts of substrate which is 1:6.

But my monos are 4 myco quarts of spawn to at least 18 quarts of CV which is roughly 1:5 if I'm using 905gr of coir. So let's call it 1:5 to maybe 1:7.

This seems like a lot when compares to standard spawn ratios but it is how I've been pulling nearly a half lb first flush from a mono.

Gotta give this a try! I vaguely remember seeing you post about how you don't even do a true casing with PE. I was about to scour through your posts to read more about it, but here you are doing a full on guide and all

im going to start using a larger sub to spawn ratio and see how it goes for me, thanks p9 :thumbup:
for your recipe, does a factor of .42 verm to coir by gram and a factor of 5.23 water to coir by gram sound correct?
trying to get it down so I can use the ratios for my "10lb bricks" the one I'm prepping soon is 11.2lb so I got the amounts below
=5080g coir
2112g verm
26,720g water
sound about right?

If your intent is to run giant batches then this should help:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26905736/fpart/all/vc/1

Otherwise I'd just break off what I need per tub. 1 prep bucket per tub with their own ingredients.
