Low nutritional resource substrate combined with a zero disruption of mycelial colony protocol has been on my mind for a while, but not for cubes. It's interesting that low nutes and a stable undisrupted colony would have an affect on blobs.
I've been toying with the idea of using 12" round pp5 pie containers that can have sfd stickers affixed to the lids, stacked in the PC and then sterilized; sub can then be inoculated with LC/LI to circumvent the need for grain spawn.
This idea was more for pans than cubes but I'd be interested to see the results with PE.

I'm gonna make up some LC with the culture I'm currently running and see how it performs in some muda bottles compared to the tubs at different ratios. Never did any PE bottles but I've been thinking about it since you guys brought up the whole minimally disrupted mycelial colony thing.
The funny thing is I absolutely love blobs in terms of experience.

My tubs have started to pin. Here are a few early birds:

Havent spotted a blob yet! Will update in a couple days when pinsets fill in across all the tubs.
So far so good

Using this method, would you have to put any nutes in the pp5 containers to feed the mycelium while it colonizes or would the liquid culture have enough to feed it? Also, I thought substrate was supposed to be pasteurized, and not sterilized. This seems very interesting as it could eliminate prepping grain or sub in separate steps, and going straight to colonization.

I want to try this its very interesting, I feel like if you used enough LI/LC you could colonize coir/substrate for sure.

I've not experimented enough to know what the lower limit of supplementation is before you experience a loss of returns (if any?), perhaps others can comment.
Coir/verm doesn't require pasteurization but hot water helps with expansion and softens the coir fibers to allow for the absorption of water.
You can definitely make all in one substrates that are sterilized with supplementation included, like bosly does with his bags, or mudda with bottles.
You can run pans without any supplementation, LC straight to sterilized manure/straw, that was what I was referring to above, it would be worth trying with cubes, I'm not sure if this has already been done.

Lots of people have done LC to sterile manure in bags etc. It’s a safe enough practice, yields will be lower without grain though.

Yeah I figured there would be a minimum requirement for grain supplementation.
I do pretty good with 1:6, I imagine things start to drop off after that.

Hey everyone, first post. I have a few shoeboxes going using the p9 method. I have a 110 qt tote I'm going to use for fruiting.
Was hoping someone would have some advice on how I should modify the tote. I was thinking of doing pasty ez dial style holes and taping up holes if necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd probably start without holes and see how it goes.

Always start un-modded with everything and tune if needed. Much easier to mod something as needed than to un-mod as needed.

Yep. Simple if possible. Modify if you must. I have a 110qt tote with four shoeboxes in it right now completely unmodified. Just adjust the lid as needed for FAE.

As I turtle my way towards healthy spawn and a thicker sub/casing I appreciate the help along the way. Thanks everyone!

Yo, p9 et alias...
I have 3 m-qts of ALCA and 3 m-qts of APE:

I am thinking of making up two 54-qt monos 3 spawn to 12 sub. Plus ALCA 1.5" pseudocasing and APE 2.5-in pseudocasing, on top of the 12.
Thoughts?
