Thickness and compression of the CV are both equally important as the compression and leveling of the substrate creates a boundary between top layer and substrate as mentioned below:
Is it correct to handle APE and APEU the same way as recommended for PE?

Shoebox recipe: Same as above but portioned out to individual shoeboxes with:
What size exactly are the shoeboxes you use? Mine load to the ope line with 1 qt spawn, 3 quarts sub, 1-1.2 quarts pseudocasing.
Should I pseudo=case my new reishi grows? I am using ~1800 g oak hwbp + 3 L H2O PCd 4 hrs. [PC necessary?]

I always run subs like this, regardless of variety.
I use 6qt shoeboxes, they fit 6 qts of materials. 15qt shoeboxes would probably work well too.
I wouldn't use this method for edibles or medicinal. Reishi takes a while to grow and would likely dry out in a shoebox, grow in bags or bottles.

I gave this a shot with APE but got trich either due to bad spawn or having sterilized manure in the substrate.
At the same time, I did Golden Teacher with 1:4 and about half a quart for a top layer, using the separate compression with the trowel.
The tub was a high dome propagation tray, with the vents left closed the whole grow.
The GT did not colonize the top layer fully. It stopped about 2mm below, and started pinning through the loose coir on top. This is not a behavior I have seen yet, and I think a slightly smaller top layer is necessary for the non-PE varieties.
This is the best yield I have pulled from 1 quart personally, at 300g/1quart spawn I have finally crossed into the "acceptable" yield range, though I suppose "good" is double.
Either way, this Tek has gotten me the best yields yet. Thanks P9

I’ve got a question for you guys.. do you usually see some blob type formations before the flush starts? I’ve got some of that going on.. I do see what looks like a tiny pin starting though but wanted to check wit chya

Mine is looking very similar right now, albeit with slightly larger blobs. this is my first time with these

Well maybe I still need to go thicker than 2” with that culture.. it is taking 25+ days to see pins on the 50/50+ casing bins.. I threw a thin late casing on them so maybe they’ll pop with that… the late casing worked for that cultures baggie

Thanks!

I saw 25 days with a horrible APE clone…actually it was more like 32 days but it wasn’t fun.

So far my shoebox is at 16 days in, just hit full colonization today. I wouldn't be surprised if it was around 9 days until harvest, so that would have me at 25 but it's got 6 full qts of sub.
How much is in your bag faht?
This culture is almost always 30-31 days from spawn to harvest in a 66qt. I forgot this is an untested clone, but my other clones run 30-31 days.

Coming along nicely so far.
I sent my buddy a jar of giant PE blobs (harvested from tubs that were trials while developing this method for them), he's done many ayahuasca trips to Peru, he said those fruits were scary strong at small doses.

It’s actually my 16qt tubs.. made on the 21st.. so 25 days today.. it’s gonna be nice though.. here’s the glc sub baggie that made the tubs

I think there’s about 6qts of cv and 2 myco qts of grain. They were fully colonized on day 4 lol. But of course the casing layer runs
Saw primordia today so not too bad.. it’s usually ~3 weeks anyway

On a medicinals note...
I have two short myco-quarts of reishi spawn in each of three - 900g dry oak hwbp hydrated with 1500 mL H2O 44-quart pasty ezDials.
Should I pseudocase with a say a half bag more hwbp?

I don't imagine that it's necessary but there's only one way to find out if it works.
