blocking noise from engines and bass speakers. * 1
    #27425147 - 08/12/21 10:28 AM (2 years, 5 months ago)

Hello everyone. I feel I am going insane from noise. Tried box fan I can hear engine noise anyways. I remember tearing out the walls of an old house and they had filed thecavity between the outer wall and the lathe with gravel. I wonder if I built a smaller frame inside my bedroom for say containing just a bed and filled the spaces between studs with sand or something If I would get sufficient noise blocking from this structure. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to share

Yes. When wearing them I can hear the inside of my mouth and the air moving through my sinuses and my heart beat. This won't allow for sleep. The headphones are uncomfortable for side sleeping and aggravate an old jaw injury.
As far as the loud music, I can't do much as I live next to a busy intersection and people drive by all day and night blasting that noise. I think my best bet is to make a sensory deprivation chamber to sleep or unwind in. I'm unsure about material though. It would be a shame to build something that didn't work

Look into brown noise generators. Not the brown note, just a specific frequency. YouTube has some 8hr BN's

Supposedly muffles loud roommates and planes overhead and stuff like that.

I have a 'lectrofan noise machine that I use sometimes. It helps a little if I keep it right near my head. It doesn't work well enough for me to use it for regular sleep.
For instance, this morning there was mowing outside my window so I got the machine and turned it on. It helped enough that was able to daydream a bit but not fall back asleep.

your idea of building another room within your room would help. filling the walls with sand seems a little extreme, but holy hell would that block the sound. There is special insulation that is designed to block a lot of sound out as well. Instead of the pink fiberglass stuff its more solid planks.

If you build another room within the room don't attach it to the existing wall, make sure you give it a little space between. the vibrations of sound will move through the walls the more they are touching. only like an inch of space needed. build it with 2x6's if you really wanna go for it.

Thank you for your reply. I have been toying with the idea of using cinder blocks. Maybe pouring slab of concrete for the roof. My first idea was maybe 7x3x3 cinder block coffin looking thing that I would leave open at one end. Put a mattress in there and use layers of sound proof material over the opening as a curtain of sorts. I feel like a door would be hard to make without compromising sound blocking quality.
I am thinking now I ought to make it taller at least. 3ft high would probably get hot in there while I slept.

Heat: Make it a lot bigger. Looking like a big closet maybe, so it doesn't look too odd.

One sick kidnapper here made the victim a box not much bigger than that, soundproofed with rockwool. It was maybe like 8x4x4 and said to be very hot indeed. Even it had some kind of air blower. The TV inside probably also heated it though..

You can buy special sound-absorbing foam that is used for sound production rooms and install it in your walls.

And layer two layers of 5/8" drywall on each side of the wall if you remodel your room. That would really help as well.

Or perhaps you can just fill the gaps between the studs with layers of cut drywall :strokebeard:

Heh that kidnap pillow fort. Crazy. Heat made me think think cinder block might be best. I won't be doing stuff in there except sleeping. Though I might keep a dish in there and put a frozen 2 liter in it before bed. I've doneit to keep temperature inside of tents down. Figure it probably work okay. I wonder if suffocation is a danger. Seems like vent would always be weak spot. Lot to consider.
I know it probably seems weird but I really don't wanna open the walls to add insulation or coat them with something. My room is fair sized and coating the floor ceiling and walls with anything is pricy and in my mind seems like it might be less effective than cement block or is it concrete block. I guess I ought to learn thedifference.

get a fan.  I have slept with a fan on for such a long time now that whenever I don't have a fan it's just too quiet.  Even a small oscillation fan can make enough noise to drown out lots of outside sound and it creates a constant sound of it's own that gets to be relaxing when you wan to sleep.

I keep thinking about this coffin you are making. You gotta have some fresh air going up in there or its going to become an actual coffin. or FAE as the shroomery would say. Unless you build it bigger, like just double walls. If you make a concrete box just big enough for you to fit in you might go to sleep in there and never wake up. you got about 5 hours I think. It's easy to make your whole room more sound proof. It just takes a little money and time. My job is construction and my hobby is music so I think about these things too. If you block out all sound that means there is no air coming through. But you can make the outside more sound absorbent. here are a couple links

heh, nice link. i've thought about the air and wondered on a minimum size for adult to breathe in for say 8 to 10 hours. then i thought i could just add a small vent up top and one near the bottom. maybe a tiny fan there to chop up the air as it comes in.

Rockwool is an amazing sound deadener.  A 3 sided room (3 walls) within an existing room would do wonders.

Interesting. If I ever redo the drywall I'll definitely be putting some rock wool in there.
I wound up buying drywall to add a second layer to the room. It's okay... Could be better

Did u use 5/8" inch drywall? Did u fill in the space between the studs with drywall by chance?

I used .5 inch drywall and added it on to the existing drywall. I didn't add drywall between the studs. I wanted to do simple first. If I am still not satisfied, I will add some walls later maybe.

Shit I'd take a step before going to a full wall too.
They sell shit called butyl tape in big rolls. Get a roll or two of that and whatever flat styrofoam in bulk you can dig up for the low or free.
On your existing drywall(of building) place butyl tape. This is the key to making it premium, the more money spent/more butyl you have the better all around you will be.
Clean the wall first.
Apply
Apply flat styro board
Apply the sheet of drywall you recently got.
Gotta be under 100$ for a good looking and sound deadening wall

Also the plus is it deconstructs with no evidence or damage to the property jus clean the wall again of whatever minimal stickiness is left over from butyl but most of it should just peel off
