Found myself a bed of P. Subs...top of the south Island and so far only about four have reared their pretty little er, heads, want more. Planning on making some more beds from it, so from what I've read, pine bark is O.K. what about using Alder chips, other types of wood chips ? does anyone know what is the best type of wood substrate, or should I just stick to pine bark. Oh, and is there any diff in ew stuff or old stuff ? I would have thought fresh pine with all that pine resin might fuck the fungi up a bit.

@totally harmless. Don't use any type of bark, use woodchip. Aged is best. Pine is fine. Alder according to our merican friends is the shit. Ive heard using a mix can be good. Important to have no other competing fungi.

Shit is that cultivated just from what you started this season? That would be impressive.

How do you tell subseco pins apart from sub pins in the wild?

Master I was wondering if you could tell us how many different patches or locations you have? I was assuming most of your finds are places you already know or are you finding a lot of new ones still?
Your probably past the point of being able to keep count tho tbh

Generally you can tell them apart by sub Seco pins not being visible at all whatsoever until you already found the adult form. But yeah they are yellowish off white. The sub pins range from purple red to golden yellow and may be more conical.

Anyone had any experience working with arbour mulch? (Mix of hard and softwoods that landscapers chip up) Definitely the most available and economical

What I've heard is that a mix can be good. But my experience with getting chip from an arborist was that it came with Larry and stinky. I may have been unlucky but I would not be surprised if this was pretty standard considering how prevalent they are. I've been using it still but fermenting in buckets for 3-4 weeks first to get rid of competition.

So cool to see you still finding some Master and also that is an awesome seco pin Sam.
All my spots from this year are dry so I think that’s it for me. Not gonna go looking for new spots this late on.
I’ve had a great season though. Plenty of subs, found my first secos and even managed a few aucklandii (despite losing one bagful in the forest lol).
I’m sure I’ll still be checking on this thread while it’s open.
Have to say I am impressed with Huntress as well coming so late but being blessed with some finds. All the best on your journey.
And last but not least the tone of the thread has been a lot calmer with RTR going from one ban to another. I am curious to know how his seco spot performed this year though.

Thanks @startingover.
I've been a bit quiet recently as I've been devouring info on growing at home. The tricky thing is that many of the teks apply to cubensis, so I'm not sure how that will go down with my seco and sub spores, but hey, it's worth a shot.
I've mainly been out distributing stem butts in public gardens like a fairy godmother. No luck with looking though, despite the recent polar blast.
Here are some pics from my microscope - I think I have mould spores with my sub spores, dang it!

Ahhhhhh the serenity.....Hehe yeah I'm torn. rtr was one of the first people I interacted with on here and he's been a constant presence since. He's helped me step back a bit from my initial enthusiasm and idealism thinking that taking mushrooms makes you a certain way, more enlightened etc etc. He provided some good banter but went way too far sometimes. Anyway he'll be back, wassup ghost, take it down a notch or 3. And yeah some seco shots would have been good. I get the feeling that he wasn't posting as many hauls as last year. Good to see some more hauls coming through Masterxenn. Nothing from me but I'm taking daily photos of my pin and will post a series once I have some more. Anyone see on one of the FB groups someone got some suspected tassies sequenced and turns out they are something else. More closely related to stunzii. Amazing deep blue on some of them, beautiful.

Stem butt tek. Unknown substrate. Keep it simple. Also this is a total fluke and is happening mostly inside a totally dark cupboard. was only aiming to spread myc to new chip

Someone said to tell them how my weraroa went - well I got 0.31 g of weraroa total (about 4 individuals) and I tripped on that plus 0.67 g of subs the other day. That's 0.98 g total so I was surprised that I reached Level 2-3 especially with the weraroa being less potent.

Just got back from an adventure up north. Unfortunately my mushrooms did not like being left with no water. So it is watering and cold temperatures to try kick start things again.

Went for a mish today and found two weraroas in two different locations. I sacrificed one in parts to hopefully promote more growth for next year, but here is a pic of the one I bought home.

Indeed, quite healthy one. And seriously... One mushroom, man. One nice strong one. All it takes these days. As I'm less inclined to ego dissolution in my (relatively) old age.
It would not have reached that size, and would have suffered the same fate as yours, had I not used nearby weeds and vegetation to house the young flushes to maintain a sheltered moist micro climate. Particularly effective in those magical locations that already demonstrate a naturally extended fruiting season duration.
If you look carefully, you should see some evidence of this in my last few posts. The odd fresh(ish) green leaves that I haven't been bothered to remove for the ake of the photograph.
