Where to buy Gentamicin ?

Hi there,
Liberty Cap season will soon be with us. I've talked my mum into letting me grow mushrooms in the front garden. (I think she's imagining button mushrooms on the lawn)
So the plan is to collect lots of liberty caps, create spore prints, make agar plates with gentamicin. And probably make an awful mess of everything and get it wrong, but practice makes perfect, or in my case, practice makes less awful than the time before.
Where can I purchase gentamicin, small amount, 0.25g or 0.5g or 1.0g inexpensively, in the UK or Europe .... or planet Earth generally.
Thanks to anyone/everyone that offers hints/tips/solutions.
Love and Kisses

You don't need antibiotics to clone or grow from wild mushrooms. Just technique

Hi Seldom Seen, Thank you for posting that link. Baba Yaga is my inspiration (for this libs project) He's my reason for thinking it might be possible. Other people say that trying to cultivate libs is a waste of time.
I messaged him recently. He swears that his rainbow isn't urine (in his profile pic). He says it's a real rainbow. When i asked: How did you get it in there ? He didn't answer. He's clearly keeping secrets from us ;-)
Are you also considering a 'libs project' Seldom Seen ? If so, will you be doing a journal about it ? If you do, I would like to tune into your journal. (Maybe i should keep a journal too)
Love and kisses

hi Bodhisatta,
I'm a newbie, I am destined to get it wrong and have failures. (Because we learn by making mistakes, that is, if the mistakes don't discourage us to the point of giving up) Technique probably is the key detail, but I am not there yet.
So I see myself as cheating, a little bit, by killing off the bacteria with gentamicin. I'm just following the cultivation advice for wild strains. I'm quite looking forward to playing with agar dishes and agar media and making spore prints. Hey maybe I should practice with supermarket mushrooms first.
Is a Bodhisatta the same as a Bodhisattva ? And are you a Buddhist ?
Love and kisses

pretty much any lab supply store will either have it in stock or can order it for you. i cant recommend highly enough finding a local lab supply store and making friends with the staff

this
there really isnt much advantage to using antibiotics for something like this. i havent used them for many years
for an outdoor grow, bacteria shouldnt be much of an issue anyway, fresh outdoor air is magic. and antibiotics arent going to help you with the stuff that would be a big issue before you spawn (stuff that actually parasitizes the myc, like mold)
if you want to use spores, just do serial streaks like in my agar guide and choose colonies from the later zones, they should have very few colonies of myc and be less intermingled with contams
for cloning, just use good technique and be sure to tear (not cut) the stipe and take tissue samples from inside the stipe Baba's grow was so sick!!! id love to play with these sometime

Hi Cilla, you're welcome! I couldn't believe that grow when I first read through the thread, pretty fkn spectacular...I would follow that to the T and wish you the best of luck with it. It's something I'd like to do eventually, but I have a couple other projects I want to get working on first. I'd love to watch your project unfold if you keep a journal, keep us posted! And I plan on keeping one for my fall projects and would love any feedback when the time comes.
And listen to these guys about the agar approach, there's much you can do before you have to resort to antibiotics. Maybe that's what Baba's rainbow is about lol. Best of luck to you with this

Honestly OP potato dextrose agar is fairly selective for fungi. You're unlikely to get a bacterial contamination on PDA. I've gotten a cloud of bloody moulds, al the colours of the rainbow, but never a bacterial colony. As long as you practive good sterile technique, you really don't need that gentamycin.
