Have any of you ever tried fruiting cubensis on vegetable scraps, rope, and crap your ex ex girlfriend left in the house?

I'm thinking of doing an in-vitro grow with some proper grain and coir, but also (chopped) banana peels, jute rope, de-fatted almond powder, spent tea bags, expired tea bags, paper or cardboard, kelp, longan peels, and longan seeds. I get that it may not fruit or may have long intervals between flushes.

In short, can cubensis grow on uncomposted compost--carbon and nitrogen sources that have not been broken down? If there's a warm-weather edible species that would do better, I'd love a suggestion.

If you want to turn your ex's stuff into drugs fruit oyster mushrooms off it first, sterilize it, and then fruit cubes off it lol.  Pink oyster are super agressive if you live someplace warm and have been fruiting for me everywhere between 70 and 90 degrees.

More seriously though, I bet you see some success and some not success.  From my readings banana waste is pretty similar to straw.  Spent and expired tea I think people have fruited on.  Paper, cardboard, sure.  This stuff will do better supplemented though.  Which means sterilization or at least pasteurization if you go with say, horsepoo and paper.

Could someone please identify if this is mold or not? I let these 2 jars sit at 100% for 2 days and after I broke them up they have these grey things on them. Before being broken up they looked perfectly white

1 is ms to grain and 1 is germ plate agar to grain (not good practice I know). I spawned 2 other jars that are like 99% that are germ plate agar to grain from the same batch and they both are all white after broken up.

Looks blue. That wud be bruising. There is a variety of penicillium that's blueish, but other than that i knw of no contaminat we get that's blue.

Oh man I feel stupid now. I just said screw it ill just throw it to grain but use very little coir so itll colonize faster. I also took it to the kitchen instead of my clean work room to do it so I don't contaminate the other stuff.

Hopefully I didn't introduce any baddies in the mix doing it this way.

I really had to shake these jars up since they were so solid, that's probably why they bruised. Well at least I learned something from this.

i'm ordering a 24x30 99.999
I am sick to death of turning clean plates and good grain jars into bacterial orgies. I have probably a 1% loss rate on my agar pours, but lately the clones and transfers are a noightmare. I just want to step it up.

Same here. 1 out of 100 poured plates will show a contam within two weeks. But as soon as i open a fucking jar of pristine winter white, the whole operation takes a gorilla shit. My control jars remain clean basically indefinitely. I leave two open plates in my sab for a few days while i do transfers 'n shit and they'll be clean.

Been over every aspect of the entire procedure multiple times in different states of mind/mood and i can find nothing other than i have yet to try using a flowhood.
That's really bitchen you can afford one.

There is a small possibility that i may wind up with one b4 the years end. A few things wud have to align, but there's hope.

Looks like mold to me, but you'll know very soon. If the grey spreads, it's mold. If it's bruising, it will go away or be surrounded by white. Do let us know! I had mold that looked like that, except there were a lot more grey spots.

I thought about posting this to troll with the caption: "Excited for G2G!"

Thanks. Does supplementation mean something specific, specific per species, or case by case? What needs to be supplied, if I were considering manure versus wheat bran? (I should also probably add used coffee grounds to my list, since I can probably beg a bag from a nearby coffee chain.)

if they were hard to break up, they were probably bacterial. it’s hard to say without seeing what they looked like before the shake, but it just looks suspect to me. my bacterial jars will sometimes look like that after a shake, weird & chunky. my guess is they won’t recover very well

Would depend on the species.  Primary decomposers like undigested plants (bran and sawdust for instance) and secondary like digested plants (poop from horses and cows for instance).  Both will run on straight pasteurized straw albeit poorly without something more (bran, coffee, poop, depending on species).  Even just using a heavy amount of grain spawn is a form of supplementation of your substrate (one way to get decent oyster yields on straw is to use more grains, but they take longer to digest so the yield will be over multiple flushes).  This is actually the typical mush cult tek, lots of grains and low nutrient substrate (coir and verm), over multiple flushes.

I've seen an image of cubes fruiting off money and an old chair.  Shit Roger Rabbit used to post.  Your exes shit will work.

I'm having some LI liquid inoculate problems.

The mycelium just sticks to the agar, making it too random what syringe draws get a good amount of mycelium in it

My dish collection is mostly pretty hard agar.
:rollingsohard:

I had excellent results with a good plate on super soft agar, but having problems with the hard agar

Any fix? The issue is when a wedge is transferred to sterile water, and not enough of the mycelium ends up dispersed in the water

Should I try scraping myc into a smaller container to ensure higher % mycelium in the water and myc not being stuck, but it's still sticking together?

Only use soft agar from now on?
Chop the plate to bits? (Sounds like contam)

It was so easy with soft agar :shocking:
