A REALLY Good Reason to Hate M$ Windoze
    #2741867 - 05/28/04 04:39 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

yeah, yeah, I have a couple windoze boxes and use winblows at work. overall, i don't think it's a terrible OS with all the support available for it. i stay true to my roots with multiple linux boxen, tho, never fear.

anyways, my WinXP machine which gets the least use is reporting that setupapi.dll or it's directory is corrupted and unreadable and to please run chkdsk.

1st question i have is WHY... i mean the machine is used for light, no cookies surfing  and email with scheduled updates and scans, strict filtering that never let's me see spam and AVG scanning.
Well, I know I just changed a power setting so the thing put itself into standby (previously hibernate). I noticed the error report immediately after bringing it out of standby (it had been cycled several times prior). I can only assume that Winblows' memory dump and subsequent store routine puked on my NTFS partition.

Here, read the knowledge base article!

What a goddamned bug! And to offer that solution with a straight face! Luckily, I at least have a ghost image of the partition after a fresh OS/application install.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, back up the volume that contains the corrupted file(s) and exclude the corrupted file(s) from the backup job. Reformat the volume, and then restore from the backup.

Rant:
Thanks to their windows update service, my win pc at home got slow as hell. Fresh reinstall on the way ....
Things that work "sometimes" or "most of the time" mean they don't work for me, it would be better if they didn't work at all, at least i would know ....

I have seen windows crash on install and I have seen the goddamned windows update fry a disk and cause me to reistall the whole OS sometimes I think they do this on purpose to make sure it was not a pirated/barrowed CD
but the I realize that they just cant produce decent software
its pretty sad that my old ass imac works more consistently than the shiny new alienware box running XP needs a reset every couple days
the mac will not crash for months at a time up 20 days, 2 users, load averages: 0.60 0.61 0.68
I this house would be more linux freindly but untill Adobe makes their softs for linux it takes a back burner basicly a novelty but one that is damn stable

That's what happens when the kernel code is 105415165151515198484 lines long. (I made up that number, but it is really high.)

Your not paying your XP box enough attention. So now its like a jealous child any attention is good attention.
