Yield for straw casing? *DETAILS INSIDE*
    #2741674 - 05/28/04 03:37 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

I plan on trying straw for the first time soon. I have a round container approximately 11" diameter and 4" depth, which means i have a total of about 100 cubic inches of straw (assuming 3" substrate depth). This is probably going to be straight straw, no poo, with plain verm for casing, spawned from 1/2 pint BRF cakes.

Does anyone have experience with a container of or close to this size? Any other recommendations instead?

Best containers for these kinds of applications are the Rubbermaid Roughnecks that you can buy at hardware stores or k-mart. They are cheap and come in a few different sizes. I personally like the smaller size, which is about a foot long and very deep.

3" isn't that deep for straw because it dries out easily and its good to have depth to hold more water and substrate.  do what angryshroom suggested and get a small yet deep rubbermaid and bulk like 5-6 inches deep.

however, 3" will still work so maybe your first time around it doesn't matter anyway.

good luck, man.
