I have a tub (large shoebox) that's pretty fucking dried out after two flushes, there are a lot of pins that don't look like aborts but they're growing insanely slow. I have 3 mushrooms that are bigger, but also been growing for a few days and still small (1.5" maybe). Can I dunk as-is or how should I deal with this?

I wud pour water down the side and float the sub for like 6hrs, then drain it.

Thanks, I was wondering if that would work. So doing that I assume it's best to syphon the water out? then maybe some paper towel to soak up whats left?

Not a problem. Condensation only forms because substrate is a bit warmer than the environment (and the tub walls). It's not a requirement, and dry sides doesn't mean the sides are really hot. Mine sometimes get dry on the side that's closer to a window.

Decided to put some old PE slants to grain. It runs this slow right?
I remember it colonizing substrate relatively normal, just fruiting slower.

thanks feaso, they colonized pretty fast especially after the shake so ill go ahead with the spawning once it reaches 100 then. going to be my first batch of shoeboxes so im pretty excited. agar has been boring me and a headache trying to identify mycellium vs mold to my amateur eyes.

I only noticed it fruiting slower.  This was APE though.  But my MS APE tore through grains as well as B+ MS.

Figures, was my best isolate but was running agar super slow. I recall also hating all my PE agar selections in the past, just been a moment. Even with slow agar in past had huge flushes.

I wonder what happens when one mixes spawn from a slower fruiting variety with grain spawn of a faster fruiting culture. Do you see one variety fruit first followed by the slower or does one take over, if the grain has been adequately mixed, not leaving resources open for the slow variety? This is assuming crosses are not occurring.  I have some enigma jars and just for fun I was thinking of mixing them with another variety. This variety comes from a clone culture so it is unlikely crosses will be occurring since di-mon mating is off the table(even so crossing might be possible, I'm not sure) While enigma is known to have a prolonged maturation time, my culture seems to have a relatively quick mycelium growth speed so it should have no problem gaining substrate ground but with the other variety definitely fruiting first it is possible I suppose that the other variety will utilize nutrients, space, and moisture for fruiting at the detriment of enigmas ability to develop.

Although, I suppose that both varieties should have equal nutrient quantities available to them since all of these nutrients are coming from the grain that has already been colonized by the expanding mycelial network and unless they leach out into the surrounding nutrient low coir, it's doubtful one network will be able to take over the others grain. So maybe you would see one fruit then later, the other.

Curious to hear your thoughts.

I once put 4 varieties of cube spawn in a shoe box and everyone fruited 2gthr, even the Ape.
All the fruits were very small, like they were all competing and a few skeevie fruits was all each cud manage to crap out.
When i removed the substrate from the shoebox it wasn't held together well at all.

Someone pls correct me if im wrong but i thnk dikariotic hyphae from two different varieties can cross.

Not sure about that one, hard to find much information to support the idea of di-di nuclear exchange. I'd love if someone had some concrete info to support that this type of crossing occurs in cubensis but it doesn't seem to be recognized as a mode of "mating" as far as I've found. I suppose it is possible that distinct haploid dikaryotic hyphae anastomose but again, it's difficult to find scientific literature specifically about this even though it has been said to occur quite often on this site.

If anyone has anything on this you can drop it in this thread if you want:

It's not an efficient way to go about a cross, but it does happen.

Nah, i'll wait for one or more of the big strappers to chime in. Then you will have your citation.
