Yowzers! I'd open and close it under water to let a little bit in, then shake it. It should be sufficient to get it wet inside so the spores wouldn't be floating through the air.

I never thought of that. That’s a good idea. I’ll def use that next time I’m disposing of a contaminated jar.

Spores still disperse doing that.
Take them outside, and shower and wear new clothes if you are doing more mycology that day.

I usually make sure to do all dirty work before the clean work, both in terms of transfering from bad plates, and disposing/working with dirty material

When nobody responds, I guess it's often because nobody knows. But I (also new) think the substrate looks kind of nasty. It's not uniform with the same look all the way across it. Never a good sign.

But it looks full of primordia--is that what I'm seeing? Hopefully there's a good flush coming soon, but the substrate doesn't look good. What's the substrate material? What's the casing, if any?

Also, those photos are a little blotchy/compressed. I find I get the best results with manual focus (smart phone camera's manual mode), or taking several photos and deleting all but the best. Then downscale and compress manually before uploading, so the site doesn't apply its automatic overly aggressive compression. I fill file a bug report/suggestion about this, but for now you can get better results with some effort. Just checked, and I don't think this site applies particularly bad/aggressive compression. I guess the users are doing that.

I dumped a tric jar yesterday while cleaning up. I wasnt really paying attention to the cloud that came from the jar and cycloned around me, thanks to the wind. I wanted to jump in a fire.

Hey everyone. I wanted to know how if these shrooms look safe to consume. If anyone remembers (and I’ll post the old photos too) i posted a few weeks ago my monotub that I built that was just a complete mess. I tried to salvage what i could and made a new tub with less complications.
* here is my concern. Ive been reading about some mold and fungus that can make people sick and im having difficulty recognizing them. Could i get some assistance?
(I did learn about agar and i have cultures going so please dont beat a dead horse lol)

If they´re looking good, they´re fine.
Shrooms from a moldy tub are no issue, unless they grow at mold line and look like junk.
In case of worries, just boil them for tea.

The last four pics say the tub needs a good amount of air, it´s too wet in there.
I guess your lid makes a seal when closed.
I´d leave it open for 1-2 hours and put it on loosely,
or better provide a small gap by clamping something in between.

Ooh thank you. Appreciate your comment. It does have a seal. I was afraid of contamination but i have the area closed off with a thick curtain.

Just a follow up. My partner suggested i use cheese cloth to cover it cause we have a small fly problem since we are in a basement.

That's a really good idea, and it could be taken further: double layered cheese cloth (wet and dried together so it sticks like one layer) + hot glue should be one of the canonical hole coverings, for when unrestricted FAE is desired but bugs still must be kept out. This strategy could be used for SGFCs.

Your partner will be so smug.

Someone of FB said these jars were mold, what do you guys think? They were inoculated from MSS on 7/22 https://

Yup unfortunately. The one on the left is really easy to tell but even the jar on the right is definitely mold. The growth is very disorganized and more fluffy then mycelium would/should be.

Did you inoculate with a syringe?

Well fuck. Good thing I did some agar too, hopefully I have a little more success there. Live and learn, you guys say to start with agar for a reason lol

And yep I sure did
