Thought I might start a new Poppy thread.  Seeing how over here, spring is just around the corner. I’ve recently sown a mix of P.somniferum & P.nudicaule. Things are progressing nicely;

Nice. I had a small successful crop earlier this year. Actually got some seeds This time. I think I'm gonna start some this fall and see if I can over winter them.

Maybe. Seedling need no warmer than 65°F. Once out of seedling stage they can take hotter temps. I guess I shouldn't state it so absolute. The 65 degree rule is a good one to follow

I normally try to sow them in late winter. But I’m sure doing so in early spring wouldn’t make too much of a difference, they may need a little extra time and care to develop in the hot summer months. Though I’d say the window of opportunity is still open, plant them before the temps start rising some more.

there was some information on another website that suggested freezing water in round pyrex containers and putting them over your potted seedlings (a few inches have been left at the top of the pot to leave an area for the seedlings so they don't get squished). i tried this and it will keep your seedlings alive during the hot months, it just takes more user input. the same method could be used if you planted in the ground, you would just have to find a way to support the ice off the ground a few inches.

A few more Icelandic poppies;
   Plus this little P.Rhoeas.
 I've noticed a few more P.somniferum sprouts in another garden bed. Though no flowers as of yet.

This is the year. I’ve tried 2 times to grow poppies and I have yet to have any luck. But I’ve got plenty of dirt tilled up and have been spreading seed on it and watering for a month now. My plan is to simply keep seeding every 2 weeks till I get something to germinate. I have no problem growing fruits ,vegetables, and mushrooms so I think I’ll get it figured out this time but it’s strange to me that I have not seen even one darn flower. So far this time I’ve thrown down a 1/4 pound of seed from an “unwashed source” 4 large jars of McCormick seeds from the grocery shelf and I have several packs I ordered from a reputable seed bank. They are a mix of all the usual suspects you see in gardens. I haven’t put those down yet cause they cost a little more and I kinda want to be sure it’s the right time. How do you folks decide when to broadcast your seed?

This year won't be normal. Literally it freezes/snows at night and kills the grass but it's so damn hot and clear sunshine the grass won't go into hibernation.
So you might get away with planting right now but I have to wait until beginning or June or late May before trusting the night not to freeze. Though I live very fare north and our general grow season anyways is 3 months lol.

Gotta watch out for birds. They will eat all your seeds. Slugs will get the seedlings. Daytime temps around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is good time to plant.

Depends what zone you're in, I'm in zone 4 and sow late March. Freezing nights don't bother them much, leaves might turn purple. Sometimes McCormick is good, sometimes it's sterile. I wouldn't go crazy throwing out seeds, you'll have to thin them once they germinate. I cover with wire fences otherwise the squirrels dig everything up.
