Any tricks to germinate poppies in warmer weather? I want them for decorations but can't get them to germinate. Ta, C3

Yeah I’ve also got some peony poppy seeds that I wanted to get going but it seems the wet warm weather of far North Queensland hasn’t allowed them to germinate at all.. I may have wrongly assumed you could grow them all year round up here

Same here Bardy, I have even tried storing the seeds in the fridge for a few weeks beforehand and then watering with icewater... No luck yet

Found a website which says they do best at higher elevations in the tropics, and don’t really like extreme humidity. So I’m going to try sowing mid autumn, at the start of the dry season.

Soak the seeds and freeze then thaw them a couple times they should germinate just fine. Not sure how they will grow there after that but it works like a charm for me. They can take a long time to germ. The first year I grew then I simply spread out seeds all fall then they came up in the spring. Now I freeze and thaw them and they pop on in a couple weeks.

I'm looking forward to growing some poppies this time around. I didn't grow any last year.
I will be sowing seed within the next month or so.
Beautiful flowers/pics Nicko, as always .

Not sure if it was done by insects or a deformity on the pods skin. It looked perfectly fine shape wise. So I sacrificed it to investigate inside & after opening I didn’t find any evidence of insects.

One variety I've grown, "Black Swan", does something similar.
The pods will have a bunch of specs/dots of dried opium/latex on em'.

Poppy seeds don't require exposure to cold/freezing temps to germinate.
Perhaps the seeds you're working with are old and not viable?
Put some seeds in a moist paper towel sitting around somewhere in your house, if they don't germinate within a week or so they're probably old/dried out/not viable.
Also...if you are sowing your seed outdoors the seeds might be consumed/moved around by birds and/or insects. A few years ago I sowed a 10ft X 10ft patch of poppy seeds, easily several hundred if not several thousand seeds. By the end of the day almost all of the seeds were gone, I couldn't spot a single seed, ants cleared out and carried away just about every single seed.
But I feel it is dry air/lack of constant humidity that prevent seeds from germinating in warm weather, not the temperature itself. Given proper consistent moisture/humidity the seeds will still germinate in 80F to 90F degree weather....I feel poppy seeds require consistent moisture/humidity to germinate, and drying out just a bit momentarily during the heat of the day will prevent them from germinating.
Best time to sow seed is around late fall to early spring.

I am in humid subtropical zone 9 and have always had terrible luck growing poppies. Got some fresh seed in a trade recently and surfaced sowed them in a tray of soil on my porch. As of a few days ago, I have at least a dozen sprouts. It seems a lot of the seed I have had in the past was likely old and/or less viable.

Thank you OM, I bought seeds from a couple of different suppliers and have only tried sowing from one batch with no luck. Maybe the other bag of seeds will go.
Plus there are billions of these tiny ants that seem to be super efficient at cleaning anything up all around here, so maybe they carried all my seeds somewhere else.

Thanks Bph and openmind. I have tried with a few different batches of seed but yes no idea if they were genuinely fresh or not, they can be hard to come by here. I will try the soak, freeze then thaw Boh mentioned next, and redo the paper towel also :-) Ta C3

@Bph when you say soak then freeze, do you drain the water off them before freezing or turn them into an ice block ? How long should they stay frozen for? Ta! C3

OM is right about the seeds, you don't need to freeze them. They originate from cold climates so they can definitely survive freezing, but it's not required. Focus on getting fresh seeds. If possible, to avoid pesky birds and insects carrying away seeds, I highly recommend starting seeds in small pots indoors before planting outdoors

Critters aren't taking my seeds (especially from the paper towel method attempts), so guess must be down to freshness. Will have to keep an eye out for fresh seeds, but hard to find here for sure.

I stopped sowing seeds after the 2nd generation, when you till the soil in spring and autumn they come up on their own after disrupting the soil.
Previous years I just sowed seeds en masse and raked them into the ground with a good solid water.
Nothing else done from my side, just ensure they dry off through the day and water them well.
Naturally my temperatures are very different in South Africa so don't base any of your germination off my temps.

I bought seeds in July and tested them for viability. Potted in promix and coir. Cage is to keep the birds and squirrels out. Seeds sprouted in 4 days. Temperatures were in the mid 80f/28c. I didn’t pretreat, just sprinkled the seeds on the damp soil and misted them in. Pot was in indirect light.

Yeah if I can get my first batch off then they can self sow :-) I have temps under 28c at times so guessing am good from that side. Ta!

These are the survivors from my July viability test. 10c/50f in the workshop. Interested in what warmer weather and longer days will promote.

With the plants being that old I would definitely add some fertilizer, especially some bloom fert before the flowers start forming

I think the blooms are triggered by shortened daylight (after reaching maturity) but I could be totally wrong about that.
