yeah it feels weird sometimes i get scared to post. ive had them for awhile they are different every year been collecting them out of peoples yards for years and adding to the madness. i try to label everything but it just winds up being a giant mess once they flower its kind of hopeless. might try just one or two varieties next year. dude i found a vial of ruderalis seeds from 6 fucking years ago thats been through some serious bullshit and one of the seeds germinated yesterday and i have been really excited about it and had to tell someone edit:
they look like they have some similar stuff. the white ones i have are supposed to be afghan originally but they always seem to be white or white-and-pink or pink-and-white. other than that i dont know where any are from except some are from store bought laurens grape and two varieties of hungarian blue which i am kind of regretting because they seem to carry the dominate traits. the frilly ones like my avy are sporadic, cant predict what the seedlings will look like. think they have all been successfully destabilized at this point. still have seeds from almost every generation so hopefully someday we can get to some serious breeding someday

Hello Poppy peeps! So I've always been interested in cultivating poppys for medicinal smoking.
I'm not real sure outside of a Google search What kind is good for my zone and easy for a noob at this. I have a lot of full sun areas on my property and nobody to bother me.
Any help turning this noob into a pro would be much appreciated

https://organicalbotanicals.com/study-of-alkaloids-from-56-industrial-p-somniferum-poppy-cultivars-2014/?v=3e8d115eb4b3
if click test results takes u to the paper i bet some of u guys will find it interesting bigger pods and plants with MORE pods contain more goodies ... 25 u say... lol
dont forget u puddy makers that stems also hold alkaloids.
EVALUATION OF SELECTED POPPY (Papaver somniferum L.) CULTIVARS: INDUSTRIAL ASPECT Milan SKALICKY1 *, Vaclav HEJNAK1 , Jan NOVAK1 , Alena HEJTMANKOVA2 , Irena STRANSKA1 1Department of Botany and Plant Physiology, Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources, Czech University of Life Science Prague, Kamycka 129, 165 21 Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC 2Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources, Czech University of Life Science Prague, Kamycka 129, 165 21 Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC *Corresponding author: skalicky@af.czu.cz Received: 16.03.2014 ABSTRACT Fifty-six genotypes (usually cultivars) of various origins, from twelve countries, were analysed for morphine production and significant characteristics of the capsule. The Saaty’s method was used to analyse the aspect of morphine production and significant characteristics of the capsule, comparing those values representing significant indicators for that production and the content of morphine in poppy straw. This covered the relation to ideotype (‘ideotype cultivar’) of poppy, with 100% values in the monitored indicators. In the case of white-seed poppies, generally with a lower content of morphine, in three cultivars (´Pulawski bialy´, ´Bělosemenný´, ´Bulharský slepák bílý´) the value of the industrial indicator was determine over 50% and the content of morphine over 0.50% in the poppy straw. In the set of blue-seed cultivars with three production levels, four cultivars were found with values exceeding 80% of the industrial indicator and morphine in poppy straw over 0.90%. In the set of grey-seed cultivars, four production levels were identified based on the values of morphine and the industrial indicator, while the first two showed good values for production - at least 0.52% of morphine in poppy straw and 50% of the industrial indicator (for example ´Soproni tef´, ´Šarišský´). Key words: blue-seed, capsule characteristics, grey-seed, morphine, pharmaceutical aspect, white-seed INTRODUCTION The current issue of phytochemical research is undoubtedly studying the production of secondary plant metabolites (essential oils, alkaloids, glycosides, etc.) for various taxa including cultivars (for example Inan et al., 2014; Kara and Baydar, 2013; Kizil et al., 2010). The efforts to intensely use Papaver somniferum L., its economic effectiveness, medicinal purposes as well as its abuse in drug addiction led to the specific cultivation of this crop to obtain cultivars of specific production types - industrial (specifically pharmaceutical) and food (specifically the seed types). Food poppies are represented by cultivars with low to negligible alkaloid content and high seed yield, typically blue to blue-grey or white colour. As industrial poppies are considered those containing in poppy straw approximately 1% of morphine (usually more), together with minority alkaloids (codeine, thebaine, narcotine, papaverine, and others); cultivars with dominant production of thebaine, codeine or another alkaloid were also bred. The alkaloids of the P. somniferum plant belong to a group of benzylisochinoline alkaloids, while from over 100 species of the Papaver genus, the presence of morphinan alkaloids (in the sequence of thebaine, codeine, morphine) is characteristic only for plants of the species P. somniferum and P. setigerum (Lee et al., 2013; Preininger et al., 1981; Ziegler et al., 2009). Only plants of these taxa show the presence of enzymatic systems with the specific ability of demethylation of methoxy groups of A and D cycles, leading to the creation of codeine and morphine (Novak and Preininger, 1987). Another opportunity here for the creation of morphine is the biosynthetic path leading from thebaine through oripavine to morphinone (for example Balazova and Psenak, 1998). In this regard, Bajpai et al. (2001) evaluated the mutual relation of the morphine and codeine content in some Indian genotypes. Morphine is first created in the root, then in cotyledons and true leaves and finally in the stem and capsule. The capsules contain most alkaloids at the state of opium ripeness approximately 10-12 days prior to full ripeness (Proksa et al., 1979). The overall yield of morphine from the surface unit depends on the yield of poppy straw and the content of alkaloids in the poppy straw. The main factors influencing the content of morphine are the cultivar, nitrogen nutrition and water regime, then, for example, post-harvest treatment of the poppy straw, presence of diseases and pests, etc. In the case of winter poppy 190 cultivars, connection of frost tolerance and alkaloid accumulation is important (Jaszberenyi and Nemeth, 2012). In the case of small-seed by poppies, we cannot omit stress factors, particularly the influence of water stress (Szabo et al., 2008; Mahdavi-Damghani et al., 2010). Given that the water regime depends on the course of the season and nitrogen fertilizers only influence the morphine content within the genetic capabilities of the cultivar, the content of morphine can be significantly influenced by selection of the cultivars (Bernath and Tetenyi, 1982). Regional studies also usually solve issues of local cultivars (for example Azcan et al., 2004) from the point of seed production and oil content. Undoubtedly there are studies regarding the genetic variability of the poppy in terms of production and its alkaloid composition of opium, including their mutual relations (Yadav et al., 2006).

In 5-6 depending on the winter lol I know that papaver somniferum is what I want. But I'm curious as to which variety is best for potency and flavor of latex. I just wanna vape it in a cold start, maybe do the simple water purification if i have enough and get seeds for each yr from it.

I’m joining in. I started Soldier boy and Deep Purple seeds on June 20 and they’re doing well. First set of true leaves showing now. I know it’s late to start but I have a hoop house and a well lit workshop to move the pots if the weather doesn’t cooperate. I’ll try some in pots and some in the ground. I wanted to see if the seeds were viable. Also have Afghan Blue and Black Swan in the mail. Southern Ontario, zone 6A Nice to see you, @rumfor69

bah you might want to put more effort into it than that. itd be a good idea to starting prepping and building the soil now. collect wild earthworms from your area wherever you can find them. mulch and compost. accumulate clean charcoal and wood ash, chicken shit, wood chips and shavings, sand, lime, grass clippings, coffee grounds, eggshells, oyster shells, pumice, perlite and any other organic materials you can get. roundup is the antithesis to all that shit though. im pretty sure its in the rules that we are not supposed to help people who consume mansonto products from amozan too so quit trying to get us in trouble. might as well just leave it alone for all the other life forms that are currently enjoying the area. wanton waste and imperialism are never acceptable
up to 28 now for the record
gave them a little water that was probably dumb

collecting worms is all well and good but best is just providing food for them ie organics and they will come and baby worms come really fast and by the hundreds! build it and they will come!! lol cant hurt bringing some extra if happen upon some but not worth hunting. IMHO.
good drainage is important for poppies, they need air in there roots, think afganistan... so dont forget sand or perlite..
see that paper for most potent var.. buddha seems to be strongest var. I googled buddha seeds but SOO many, kinda hard to know. but well known var aswell that are used for seed and pharma. white seeded are generally weaker and grey/blue seem to be best from my quick look.
those frilly peony var i really dig may have to search some out!
as long as somewhat temperate and not tropical shouldnt be an issue growing any poppies. grow in northern canada to upland mexico. i imagine not more than a week or 2 dif in rippening and they are early season and generally finish mid summer after days reach there maximum length. alot of flowers are opposite flower when days get shorter. BUT of course still flower even if not planted in april/may. some var may like to sproat a bit easier in cooler spring, my sense is its the cold stratification but also cool means less evaporation and those tiny seeds cant take getting baked and dried(as surface sproat) in hot summer days. point is as long as stay moist for few weeks should sproat/grow.
ID love to see yeilds of latex..

@MadMuncher
I had a Black Peony mutant that was a beautiful red frilly color. Definitely will save a few of those.
My best plant right now has 5-6 big pods coming out of it. I have some seeds from a local poppy I found near my house that had 10-15 pods on it. All my pods have grown to a pretty nice size, I definitely wish I harvested more from those other local poppies, but I saw someone else had been cutting some pods off and left it for them. I did take a pod so I could have a ton of seeds right now.
My Purple Haze genetics are coming up with 2-3 pods per plant, and the Black Peony's are coming up with 2-6 pods per plant. I now have a sweet collection of seeds now Turkish White, Queens Poppy, Black Peony, Purple Haze, and Unknown #1 (the 15 pod plant).
There's another 3-4 months left in the growing season where I live, so I am going to attempt one more cycle, but I am unsure if they will flower too early. We will see if I can keep them in their veg state long enough. I got a bunch more pics, will get my camera tomorrow and upload them. Here's a few previews I saved though. Will get some more pics of the pods that are almost ready, and the best plant I have with 6 BIG pods.

Looking good guys. Tried growing a half dozen poppies this year in a flower pot. Planted late and now they're all yellowing (I think they want a bigger pot). Might just call this season a wrap and grow a couple indoors via grow light as a side project for the below zero fall/winter coming up.

I've got to get some pics up, I never thought to count heads on a single plant but I have one with with 115!I thought it was a few plants together but it was so heavy it fell on its side early on. Others in the garden have in the 40s. I always thought growth conditions produced multiple blooms never thought it could be selected. We'll see next year I guess.

By the way everyone I have a bunch of the Purple Haze x Black Peony seeds if anyone wants any. The pods turn a beautiful purple color too! Flowers are from above pictures so you can see what they look like. Potency yet to be determined!

Looks like the P.somniferum seeds I've sown in late winter are starting to pop.
Plus some random ones that have shown up next to E.californica poppies. Where I threw some moldy pods from last year.
Of course, the P.nudicaule poppies are first to flower.

All I know is I have a kickass seed mixture for next year though! Also are those seeds on that paper towel poppy seeds? All the poppy seeds I've ever had are freaking tiny not like that at all. Plus I was under the impression poppy seeds germinated best in soil? I've actually found germinating them deeper in the soil then recommended is better because then they want fall over as young ones.
