Why'd you fail last year?

I'm in Pacific NW and just sowed. First year trying.

I tried to start them in spring and they never took off. Just sprouted then got hot and died. They really seem to like the cold winter. We had 2 snows that were over a foot and for lasted days. They were happy as could be when the snow melted.

Getting close! I have been out of town for a few days and when I got home they had really taken off. Looking forward to a mellow weekend once they are ready.

Hey y'all what are considered good companion plants for poppies?

I have a bag of wild seed mix from walmart the one with marigolds ects. That also has ornamental poppies.
They seem to get along well, I should have spaced them out more.

Those look great I'm just sowing.

Decided to scratch the first few that looked ready.

Lots more behind this but honestly I’ll just let them go to seed and eat the seeds. I’m one year clean last mothers day from the needle. Justlooking at this has me breaking out in a sweat, covered in goosebumps, and shitting water. I may get enough to try and cook it the right way and smoke a bowl. But truth is I’m terrified of this. I didn’t know how it would make me feel till right this moment. Stay safe friends.

sorry dont mean to tell you what to do. that sounds really bad i dont think you would have any real friends here if nobody advised against it. maybe you could have somebody harvest and put them away for a toothache or broken ankle. scared to post you guys are sketchy ha

~50% success rate thinning small ones out and transplanting to containers on cool overcast days, some varieties seem really picky ~20%

Haha.  I forgot I said that here. I recently quit taking Kratom. I had a huge problem with it and it was always tied to my real drug addiction. Once I stopped the real drugs last year I went all in on kratom. It saved my life but left me a shell. I still had to pay up and go through the WD. I said that when I was in the hardest part. I’m feeling much better and like myself now. I haven’t taken mushrooms in close to 3 years cause I got the strong feeling they didn’t like to play well together. Not to sound all dippy do da but the mushrooms told me to stop taking drugs and the kratom or they wouldn’t show me anything new without saying it. Ya know what I mean? I’m looking forward to my next trip. Put some spores to agar a couple weeks ago but I’m rusty. They look like shit after the transfer so I’m going to start fresh. I’m also happy to report my poppies are alive and well. I will be saving all the seeds and pods till next year. If I need em they are there. If not I’ll keep drinking my herbal tea and smoking weed.

Thanks for saying this. I know it comes from a Good place cause it good advice. I am letting them run the course and have zero interest in using them for anything other than to feed the bees and as mulch/something to climb for the pumpkins I’m going to plant there in a couple weeks. And of course more seeds to grow them again. They are pretty flowers for sure.

Is it too late to try and start some seeds in zone 6a?

Are there any tips for starting them now if it is late?

I have read some stuff about using ice to get them started and going during spring/summer but it kinda seems like a pain in the ass

Hey guys, I've been cultivating some beautiful P. Somniferum flowers.

There's a lot more but these are the most recent shots I have at hand.
I intend on cleaning the opium in the traditional manner and consuming by vaporization.

How much light do poppies need to germinate?

I planted some seeds today and I put down some chicken wire and some burlap on top of the chicken wire. To protect from birds and rodents and maybe shade them on hot days until they get out of the seedling stage

I think enough light should get through the burlap right?

Edit: also what is the smallest container size that would be ideal? Like 5 gallon or more and how many plants per container?

I might plant some more in containers tomorrow

In my long experience with growing P. Somniferum it is easiest to direct sow and treat them as a wild flower.
Growing in containers is simple as well, being a wild flower somniferum finds it cozy in most soils given nutrition and microbiology are present.
Traditionally I will plant in rows, spreading seeds along a small trench lined with bamboo supports. Usually between these bamboo posts I have chicken fencing for additional support as P. Somniferum enjoys being blown over and laying down on the job.
I do not bother to space out singular seeds or pregerminate before planting, I will simply direct sow and thin them out to prevent my pods from being too small.
I'm fortunate as I'm in a fairly temperate zone and do not have to worry over my soils becoming too dry given I live next to the Pacific ocean in a very humid area. I will leave my seeds in direct sun with no burlap or shade tarp.
Given your local environment allows for temperatures of 50-75 fahrenheit with humidity ranging from 40-90 daily you should be fine.(85-95 fahrenheit with 30% humidity or less needs shade tarp)
I hope this helps and enjoy

Edit: I have grown in 1.5gallon to 5 gallon containers, as long as there isn't any root crowding you can fit about 2-4 flowers in a pot.

Thanks for the reply.

I have read about ice watering or using ice cubes when starting later in spring/early summer but I'm assuming that wouldn't be necessary until I would need the shade tarp type of conditions (the 85-95F and <30% humidity)

Or at what point would using the ice Tek be necessary?

They're correct, ice water and ice upon the substrate will not harm your flowers but will assist in germination. I'd use this when weather is too hot or if you're growing indoors with a lamp.
