Did you remove the weaker ones yourself or let them compete for space amongst themselves?

I let them compete. My supplemented soil mix was more than enough for all of them. Tons were doing great. I just had to rip out handfulls till like 20 were left then let them get big, then used scissors to cut out smaller ones

Do any of you bother with stratification? Just wondering if this would occur naturally if I sowed them outside right before the snow/frost begin settling in.

Tried it last year. Transferred poppy seeds in and out of the freezer every 2 weeks through the winter and the seeds sprouted when I planted them. Tried sprouting without stratification this spring and the seeds sprouted. Planted some pots from this years seeds on August 1 and the seeds started sprouting yesterday. I do store my seeds in a cold room in the basement but this years seeds have been at room temperature to dry.

I've always thrown my seeds around in march. So I guess they were cold shocked naturally as I get freezing temps often in march. Anyways, even when I start them indoors, they are fine and germinate well. For me stratification isn't needed.
So I tried a teaspoon of my poppy pod powder. Did a first pull, a dark liquid came out. Second pull, the liquid was almost clear so I stopped there and drank the tea. I had never in my life tried opiates, not even opioid painkillers, so I was a bit worried about nausea and itchiness but there was none. For the good effects, I did not feel strong euphoria but I was kind of serene, calm, sedated and warm. It definitely felt very good.
Has anyone tried to make a hell lot of tea and evaporate it to get a solid extract ? Can it be vaped ?

If you want to vape then just harvest the latex and clean it up further from there.

The latex is a hassle to harvest and there's a high chance people will notice scars on pods. Considering the effect of a teaspoon of poppy pod powder and the fact that most of the solid material mass turned into gunk and was discarded, there's a high chance the leftover crystals/solids/goo/whatever left after evaporation is very potent.
Crushing dry pods and doing two water extractions seems less of a hassle.
Will try on a small scale and report back.

Did like I did before, two water extractions (simmer for 15 minuts with occasional stirring) with a tablespoon of crushed dry pods as a test run. The first pull came out dark and bitter and the second came out lighter with much less bitterness. I evaporated the two pulls (don't use a lot of water for the extraction, it's a pain to evaporate) at 80°C in the oven in a silicon mold for baking cakes. The leftover material forms flakes of caramel/glass like matter. I guess with more pods extracted, it can form a thick layer at the bottom of the mold. Silicon is important to be able to separate the flakes from the mold easily.
It can readily be redissolved into a drink or eaten straight but it's extremely bitter. Gel caps or parachutes may be a solution.
Tried to vape a small amount of material in my little flame vaporizer. Vaped a small amount (few hits) and ended up with very faint blue clouds. Turns out my vaporizer isn't powerful enough and the heat does not distribute well within the flakes, the top one were carbonized (no burning tho) and the center ones were untouched. You would need a better vaporizer but it worked. The taste was pretty nice and the vapor feels very sweet. If there was no taste nor blue color, you wouldn't notice it. I vaped a few light hits until I felt the effects and called it.
Next time I'm doing it with 100grams of crushed pods. Will do 3 pulls and measure the weight of each one.

Interesting, thanks for the update.
I've never used crushed pods because I always had a pretty large field at home and was able to harvest as much as I wanted.
I would add water in a pot and skim off the impurities and allow the water to boil off at low temperature leaving the crystals.

Reporting back on the hot water extraction.
I did three pulls on 30g of dried crushed pod material (mixed species). One pull was 15 minutes of simmering in water with the occasional stirring. I did not press the gunk on pull 1 and 2 because I wanted to do it only once, after the third pull.
First pull : 5,5g Second pull : 1,35g Third pull with squeezing and rinsing the gunk : 1,35g
In retrospect, a third pull maybe was not necessary. So 8,2 grams of tar was extracted from 30g of dried material. I tried dissolving a little amount back into water and there is a fair amount of unsoluble dust floating around so I guess it could be further processed.
