In the UK, when's the best time to pick pods for opium tea?
I've noticed quite a lot of opium poppies around recently.

Yes, wild ones - I might take some pics tomorrow.
But I mean, is it best to wait till the crown of the pod rises to release seeds? Or is that too late?
And is it worth picking ones which have dried up?

Yeah I think they say that’s when they’re most potent, but they’re pretty much still potent af a while before that.
Just wait for the petals to drop and the pods to swell up. Crown will start turning upward and then they’re good to go.

HI EVERYONE! - My plan is to go around town and just throw poppy seeds everywhere before a time when we are going to get like 4-5 days of rain this fall, so I need massive amounts of poppy seeds that are the active kind, at the lowest cost possible.
My best guess is to find a baking company supplier, as to order "samples" of their poppy seeds, and test to see if they sprout, right? and then order in bulk... Because I heard the ones they use for cooking are the active kind, and a byproduct of the massive pharmaceutical poppy fields. Is this true?
Any leads on how to get loads of seeds for the lowest cost possible much appreciated.
PS- I've done this before with a little success and like little to no work at all.- it's obviously gonna depend on the weather, but I'm willing to throw some money at it for fun!

Just Google man, there are heaps of vendors selling kilos of poppy seeds. And yes, they sprout in my experience.

Right!
Anyone know which brands carry active types though? I know back in the day people said the McCormic ones were from the poppy fields of Holland

Looks good rum. I’ve kept 15 grams of dried pods and the same of seeds with more to come. I’m going to start some more in pots and move them into my workshop if the weather turns foul. I was talking with my next door neighbour and noticed she has small poppies in her garden. Said they pop up all the time and she pulls them. Told me I could take them. No name pink frillies. I’ve watered them well and will try and transplant. I’ll take them out as a plug. No loss if it doesn’t work.

Free flowers are always ok. I think I'll definitely get some seeds to keep me going and I've been scoping out a seed supplier that has lots of different somniferum ones. Gram of seeds for cheap.

Hello poppy growers,
Today I decided that I would process all my pods harvested during the last 4 or 5 years. I just threw the dry pods from the plants in a cardboard box every year. I was always letting some of the pods on the plants to have them sprout back every year without doing nothing.
So now I'm left with a shitload of seeds, I'm gonna throw them just everywhere in the fall, and about 500g of dried poppy pod powder.
So my question is : how much dried powder for a light tea ? All I could find was "3 teaspoons" or "10 grams" and I wanted some more input before drinking anything.

First time posting. I'll be very brief.
Learning and really very grateful for the information I'm finding here. They seem to grow very easy in Alaska.

Planted some more seeds in mid July, I only used a small amount but appears they all germinated a couple of weeks ago. It looks like this throughout the entire 2 x 0.5 metre raised bed at the moment.
Might have to thin them out and attempt to replant some when they get a little bigger.

They also support each other and create micro climate so...thin a lot later than sooner imo

I usually wait till they start putting out a few sets of true leaves. At that point if they are going to thrive they’ll need some space to spread their roots. Otherwise they can grow stunted and it’s harder to recover from that the longer you wait.
