How much of a variation in size and colour is there with poppy seeds? I’m just starting to harvest seeds for the first time. Pods deliver a lot of seed. I think the pill bug passed out after getting high on my supply.

lighter colored flowers make lighter colored seeds, darker flowers make darker seeds

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about growing poppies in the tropics and if it’s possible to get decent plants?
I’ve just scattered heaps of bread seed poppy seeds through my garden bed and all have germinated. They’re currently about 25mm tall and have just shown their first leaves. It’s winter here and the lowest temps are probably 15-20 degrees Celsius and we’re getting pretty consistent cool rain at the moment. I’m thinking it might warm up and start to get dryer soon.
Any help is appreciated, and if I’m dreaming about getting decent flowers just let me know haha

Not sure how different it is from North QLD, but they’re grown in some tropical - sub tropical regions around the golden triangle in south east Asia. so it isn’t out of the question for them to grow in some of those types of climates.
I assume you would’ve kept them in the fridge to simulate winter frosts pre germination. My only concern would be how they would fare with the higher humidity. Aren’t the summers up there really humid? I know most poppies prefer temperate climates & some require it. But am not sure how adaptable P.somniferum is specifically to growing in tropical conditions. From what I’ve read it’s doable but not ideal.
That being said, I hope yours thrive!

Haha thanks mate, I’ll let you guys know!
And no, I didn’t use any kind of cold treatment, just soaked them in room temp water over night and then scattered them the next day. Looks like nearly 100% of them germinated because there’s just bucket loads of seedlings everywhere.
Just bought a big 250 gram bag of those kosher bread poppy seeds.

Looks like the temperatures of the Golden Triangle are very similar to here. The amount of rain they get looks pretty similar to here as well. Maybe they’ll be fine?
I don’t understand why people say to freeze the seeds or cool the seeds if they’re this easy to germinate in warm weather? Could it just be that some varieties need to be cooled down before germinating? Sounds like a bit of a myth to me…

I went through the vendor list and couldn’t find anything. Can we ask about seed vendors here? Feel free to PM me.

Keen to hear how the bread poppy seeds go Bardy! Can we grow these out in the backyard or best to hide them away? Ta :-)

i know your post wasn't directed towards me but most common people wouldn't even bat an eye if they saw poppies just don't score them that is super illegal if you're doing something other than harvesting seeds its best to dry stems and pods and follow a tek.

I agree with gimp, but yeah they are still illegal in Australia. There was a story in the news not too long ago about a lady that was arrested for having a heap of poppy plants growing on her property. I think she claimed she thought they were something else, or that she didn’t know they were illegal (not sure).
I think as long as you’re not growing hundreds of them and you’re not advertising the fact that they’re there then you won’t get done. It’s just as illegal as weed but they have more ornamental value, so it could be that a person is just growing them for ornamental purposes.

Thanks guys! I remember reading on that one now, she said they were for wedding flowers I think? I've never seen them here in QLD before, so thought good to ask, certainly seen heaps in gardens on holidays to Tassie... Might head to the spice aisle tomorrow and see what they stock. Ta, C3

Alrighty. Thank you to the folks that pointed me in the right vendor directions. Now I just need to do a little homework and select something appropriate for NW WA State.

It’s usually just a way of storing them long term / keeping them dormant.
Over here the best time to plant them is mid to late Autumn. That way they can slowly develop into a small shrub & be primed to absolutely explode once spring hits. I’ve made the mistake of planting them in late winter to early spring & many just couldn’t keep up with the increasing temperatures and lower humidity. So it could also be a regional superstition.
I imagine the higher humidity would probably be helping your little seedlings at the moment. Hopefully they will tolerate it once they’re older.

Yeah we’re getting constant small showers of rain too, so I haven’t needed to water them in ages. They’ve developed two tiny little pairs of leaves so far and the original leaves (cotyledons?) have turned purple… I think maybe from the sun? I’m not sure why they’ve done that.
