Beautiful poppies in a beautiful location. I like the bumblebee coming in to the white poppy.
I didn’t plant any whites. It’s a pretty volunteer.

Thanks man. They are beautiful flowers and easy to grow. Sometimes I think people over complicate their cultivation- it’s easy as turning the earth, raking it to a fine tilth and spreading the seeds. The afghans mix the seeds with dry sand and so you can spread them more evenly and you don’t have to thin as much. I mix 10/1 sand/seeds and cast seeds in February. All somniferum in the pic are progeny from Merck Tasmanian, Helmand province and Izmir farms crossed that I’ve let naturalise in the vegetable beds over the past 4 years. I select along the way for good attributes and get a nice mix of colours and frills; white is definitely recessive.. Good thread

My best poppy bags so far. 4 others have a few growing in them but they're not as nice as these ones. Think I may need to start thinning them out soon.

help him that is a huge waste of seeds its hard to look at. looks like we might need to have a little talk about power. hopefully he saved a few for next year and figures it out and can spread them around cuz that was at least an acre worth of seeds. thank you for the lesson. understand how special they are these were nearly lost forever. at one point there were less than a dozen seeds left and they were nursed back from the brink one seed at a time. much was lost. did he forget that we warred with fierce monsters and giant inbred cannibals and won? there were only a dozen of us then summer wasnt even a thing yet does he know we hunted them through that great wilderness up into the cliffs where we burned and smothered them ground them back to dust that is power. look at what is in your hand

I'm sorry I didn't know I was doing anything wrong 😒 i just figured I should use all the seed that was given to me instead trying to save it and have it go bad.
I'll save what seed I can from these this year and will do better in the future. I'm learning...

They might be problematic to thin when they are that close together. Their roots can get tangled up. I would have started thinning when they were smaller. I would thin to a few, and finally, to one per container. Like the point you are at now, I'd have a couple in the container. Just in case one gets eaten or smashed. Once they start cabbage, thin to one.
You really don't need to go crazy with the seeds. Some people mix the seeds with sand so they can get better spacing when broadcasting. Seeds will be viable for many years, unless you store them badly. You don't need to worry about them going bad, probably.

it is going to be ok. recommend transplanting small clumps of them on cool overcast or rainy days. the seeds last for years. they will germinate after 6 or 7 years of improper storage. also even the seeds from tiny stupid looking ones are viable. would probably last over 10 years if kept cool and dry in a sealed container

Oh I didn't know that they can be kept that long. I've read that transplanting almost always kills them so I don't really wanna risk having none survive. I was just gonna prune them with scissors till 2-4 per was left spaced apart. The container is 12"w X 10"h

I think there is some kind of blight taking over my poppies.. it's spreading from the ground up and the leaves are dying.

The lower leaves on my plants have been turning brown. I’ve been pinching them off. Are your plants dying? Any pictures?
Blooms are bizarre and beautiful.

If you harvest by cutting the head off, how are the chances theyre growin a second head out of the same stem ? i was rather surprised when i saw the most healthy one grew a second bloom when the first head was already in pod stage. I wonder if cutting the head could maybe induce this ? Or is it better to just harvest the rest of the plant
