"liquid aminos" as possible peptone replacement
    #27407954 - 07/29/21 10:57 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

hi ya'll
a certain brand of "liquid aminos" is made from Hydrolyzed soy protein, and i believe peptone is made from hydrolised soy bean. so really would the sodium (approx. 160 mg to half teaspoon) be detrimental to LC/agar mediums ?
Liquid Aminos is a liquid protein concentrate, derived from soybeans. It contains the following naturally-occurring Essential and Non-essential Amino Acids:
16 Amino Acids
Alanine Arginine Aspartic Acid Glutamic Acid Glycine Histidine Isoleucine Leucine Lysine Methionine Phenylalanine Proline Serine Threonine Tyrosine Valine
and then there is the nutritional yeast plauibility ?

Isn't liquid aminos made from cocunut, being a soy free alternative to soy sauce? I guess it can be from anything, not necessarily coconut.  Regardless it's going to be very high sodium

Nutritional yeast contains 18 amino acids and is generally ≤1.0% NaCL (Sodium chloride).

Soy peptone contains 18 (or 21, depending how you classify them) amino acids and is generally ≤3.0% NaCL (Sodium chloride).

Nutritional yeast is generally fortified with 5 forms of vitamin B.

Nutritional yeast generally contains peptides.

Nutritional yeast is a great additive to agar (in terms of nutritional benefits)

Skip the liquid aminos, go for the yeast or peptone.

i am guessing at 1~2 grams of each per liter of culture media and the nacl would be negligible. perhaps if it gets blended with gypsum before dillution ?
