The implications of the internet....

The other day, the idea occured to me about how ultimately the internet has the potential to connect every mind on the planet (if all had access to it), to every other mind, in an almost real time fashion.
When I say connect every mind with every other mind, meaning that it lays before each person the potential to access a wealth of knowledge that can be contributed to, exchanged with, and absorbed by millions and millions of people. When compared with the past methods of the exchange of knowledge, whereby it was once passed from generation to generation through folk lore, then later on through books and academic study, the proliferation of such knowledge was severely limited by proximity issues with those who possessed such knowledge.
But the internet offers the potential for a massive exchange of knowledge, in a manner never before seen.
This might seem blindingly obvious, but I feel that there is real significance behind such potential. Especially if we consider the fact that the majority of advances in all areas are atleast based on a combination, culmination, reassessment of previous ideas.
Presumably this could, and probably will lead to an exponential expansion and progression in all fields of human understanding.
What do others think??
( Having had this realisation, I found it particular amusing to recieve an email a few minutes later telling me about how I could enlarge my penis with a course of herbal tablets. haha, but maybe that is just my sense of humour

I have had those thoughts before.
The funny thing to me is that instead of expanding our knowledge, we use the internet to look at porn and read about t.v.

Key word: potential.
So does TV and radio. When TV came out people thought that it would be an amazing educational tool, but we all know the direction it went. The problem is that we have all this ability to communicate and nothing worth saying. Case in point: the shroomery.

I think TV has been an amazing educational tool. Think of how much you have learnt from it in all sorts of areas of understanding.

Yes I've often thought about this - ever since I heard Terence Mckenna speak of the internet as the beginnings of a "global nervous-system," this idea has been very fascinating to me.
Imagine some scientist somewhere discovers something.. In the future, as soon as this scientist makes his discovery, all science everywhere would obtain the same data - this is basically already happening, but the extremes it could go to are kind of spooky to think about IMO.
Imagine a future without creepy government agendas - Imagine a future where everybody is experiencing related pieces of what everybody ELSE is experiencing at all times. I can't imagine how great something like this could be, as long as there weren't still scumbags around who wanted to take everything over.
I've read claims that we will be able to put chips in people and basically give them better memory recording and retrieval processes with the assistance of electronics; meaning people could remember precisely everything they experienced. This in combination with a wireless internet connection could trigger explosions of growth in all areas of human life. Imagine connecting to the internet with your brain, and looking up a word that you just heard that you didn't understand. Bam you now know the word, without even exhaling. Imagine a biologist discovers something interesting about dna, instantly contacting a chemist for certain data and confirmation.
Telepathy would be "normal" with something like this.
lol but yeah even without microchips and that kind of stuff, the internet is slowly changing "everything." I for one can't wait to see "everybody" walking around with wireless connections; able to retrieve any piece of data they wish at any time from this amazing medium

but yeah, the future is going to be wicked cool, you know a lab recently invented cables that are something like 200,000 times faster than cable over the same size wires. no doubt in 20 years they'll be ten million times faster. throw in some cool robotic type technology
