Images are too big on a laptop screen
    #27394651 - 07/20/21 04:03 AM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Problem: for many images, the preview is small, too small to see detail, but the full sized image is too large to see detail. All I see is a tiny section of the image which doesn't really reveal the content.

Here's an example I uploaded which is uncomfortably large when zoomed in:

There is an account config preference called "Limit width of images in posts? (0 to disable)". I'm not sure what it does, but it does not limit the photo max width when zoomed (it seems to have no effect when I set the value "2000"). Could the feature be changed/fixed to do that? I'd like to set the max size to somewhat bigger than my screen, so I can still see a lot of the content at max zoom.

Hey, I just realized I never responded to your post, I'm sorry about that!

I've implemented your suggestion. It's not entirely free of glitches, like the zoom-out animation centers on the wrong location, there's still padding at the bottom of the image equal to its original height, and if you set the maximum width to less than your screen width, the zoom button can appear in an odd location. Fixing these would require modifying the third-party Javascript we use for image zooming, which I'd rather not do because that makes it harder to update in the future. But hopefully this works well enough for your purposes, and I'll try to find a more elegant solution eventually. Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you so much! I'll be able to see images so much better after this. I hope others manage to find this feature and benefit as well

In firefox, you can also use Crtl + Scrollwheel (not sure if there's a keyboard combo for it) to change the zoom of the window.  Really handy for all the goofball sized images especially with a low resolution laptop screen.
