dont sterlise with a microwave
    #2740027 - 05/28/04 12:05 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Man, i lost a syringe. i read somewhere you could sterilize in a microwave with a small amount of water in a used syringe. well i wouldnt recomend it, since the needle is metal. the secound i turned the thing on the whole microwave was filled with lightning, so i cut it off. the damb needle melted, in like 1 secound. but im shure it was sterile, just un useable

Autoclave bags that have the strip on them turn color at a certain temp, but pressure doesn't matter to the strip, unfortunately pressure matters to spores. If the pressure isn't high enough it won't crush the spores to death, however; the microwave does a nice job of disinfecting things, I use it for syringes, just make sure the needle is all the way under water.

a pressure cooker doesn't sterilize by "squeezing" contaminant spores and bacteria to death. it works because water under high pressures requires a higher temperature to boil. once water is boiling it doesn't rise in temperature (generally), so by adding pressure you raise the temperature threshold and can reach the temperature required to kill spores and bacteria.

Damn, you must have a crappy microwave. I mic metal all the time in mine with no prob... let alone a small needle.

Are the sleves you pc the syringes in reusable? if so, that'd be dope.

IMO and from everything taught to me in med school it is the pressure that kills the spores, not just a rising temperature level. Contams are killed by two things, pressure, and temperature. Some can be killed by heat and not by pressure, some are killed by pressure and not by heat. Sorry to dispute you.

I like boiling water and sucking it up into the syringe multiple times, this is after I have washed it with soap , h202 and alcohol(99%-ISO)

So like I was saying I suck the wate up and spit it out and I do this for awhile (10 times at least) and then on the 11th time or whatever I leave the water in the syringe , clean the needle well and cap it.
Simple.....then get out the spore print and do my thing, and I have never had a bunk syringe , hell I havent had a bunk jar PERIOD since I have made my own syringes, but I dont want to get cocky I am sure I will court some nasties eventually again one day.(BUT ...IF, that happens..I doubt it would be because of a dirty syringe  )

Well, whether it's the microwave or the type of metal I use, here's some fun things to do with your microwave!

If you use the microwave you have to take the needle off before you put it in. Then you soak the needle in alcohol while you are nuking the syringe and put it on quickly once you are done nuking. This method is fairly reliable if you dont have a pc.
