Quirks Tub Prep 6

I like unmodified tubs. It's a modestly controlled environment. Liners are implemented, cut to size (25'x28'), in the 66qt sterilite. Liners promotes surface conditions and avoids excess moisture loss as well as allow for removal of the sub for harvest and minimizing clean up.
Starting with a quick scrub to remove any nasties and to leave the clean tub wet to stick the liner. I clean the lid too as sometimes the mean grean sets in, especially if you dont clean tubs promptly, and a sporeladen lid sweating isn't ideal. Cleanliness is next to godliness and clutter is bad for the soul.
Add 2qt verm then 800g dry coir crumbled completely. Maximum surface area for efficient hydration js is ideal. Wear a respirator, mine has brown coir dust caked on the filters instead of my lungs. Even my dehumidifier resevoir has a film of brown...
Add 1gal hot ass tap water. I may up my water heater temp just to get it moving, but be careful doing so. The heat energy is important to force hydrate and expand the coir.
Repeat. Then wait until cool, I usually just overnight it. I like to stack them all with a buffer tub at the bottom to insulate from the cold floor.
The coir will have expanded and fluffs up further when mixed. Homogenize and separate a top layer. It's very loamy and I like around 800g for the top layer.
Add the AXENIC spawn. Homogenize and tamp evenly. Lay the top layer and tamp evenly but tuck snug around the edges. Form a faint moat, this catches any perspiration to mimize pooling as well as restricting FAE and thusly reducing side pinning.
1 week in should look rather white and in the end a wonderful canopy.
I'd like to thank everyone who's work I stand upon. Hopefully this write up helps someone, and thanks to all who spent the time reading another monotub "tek". Lastly and most importantly I cannot stress enough the importance of clean spawn, it's godly.

Nice write up 🤙
I've been meaning to bend your ear about your melmak tub prep. Do you do anything different for those?

Thanks Quirk! What do you mean by "tuck snug around the edges"? Just add more at the edges so it's still even but more tightly packed?
Also, do you find there's a minimum spawn thickness that works well? And how thick is your top layer?

I haven't used liners since I started out, but the removal of the sub for harvest could be a useful application.

Pear shaped, I compact the edges a little extra, and my top layer mass is ~800g. Tek has been edited with further explanation.

Thanks!
The top layer wouldn't be 800 g in a smaller tub, though. Can you make an estimate of the thickness? Or if you know the tub dimensions, I'll do the conversion since according to my measurements 800 g coir is about 9.8 liters when hydrated (less if packed). (this isn't dry coir we're talking about though)

Not sure about running other tubs exactly, it will depend on dimensions, but in theory you'll just dial it in accordingly. Make sure you lay your top layer thick enough, but not necessarily too thick like as in half your sub material.
As I see it the top layer is kind of the last portion of the entire sub to be colonized so there's no prolonged FAE on any one portion of the surface before any other. The bottom portion of the sub is mostly homogeneous so that colonizes quickly and evenly before the whole thing has nowhere to go but up, where it will ultimately fruit. Controlling surface conditions.
I've set myself up specifically to run these tubs as they are common, rectangular, have minimum corners, and are clear lidded. Got about 50 of em at this point. 35 filled and colonizing currently and a few more bags of spawn ready to go. Unless I find some funky coir differences this is how I'll run it by default.
If you want to keep notes, especially should you try adjusting your variables like coir verm and water, just write them with sharpie on the side of your tub during the process.

I love liners, makes cleanup so easy. I get em in bulk so its super easy, premade to spec

Awesome write up Quirk, was curious how you approached tubs after seeing your Melmak grows. How much spawn are you using here, and what kind of lighting are you running?

1 bag containing about 2.2kg of hydrated grain. I don't measure by volume as different grains measure differently. My lights are the popular barrina T5LED and some knock off ones cause I was cheap or impatient at times. I prefer the Barrina.

Sweet, I just bought a bunch of those big coir bricks. Such a mess to break up and weigh but the eco earth / exo terra bricks are all over the map in terms of weight. And +1 for skipping the bucket and just cooking the coir in the tub, been meaning to switch over to this style.
But, I just noticed - you're running these unmodded, with no lid flip? That kinda comes off as crazy talk but it's clearly working for you. Do you have a circulation fan running or anything? Even in my PastyWhyte style tubs with little FAE holes I often get cultures that look a little choked. Do you mostly just run PE / Melmak (which seems to like lower FAE)?
Also, these are the filters I use, and the ones I believe we need for particles (verm is esp bad for the lungs):

There's a wall mounted AC running and a fan pulling air, but that's just the way my room is built. I would think that setting your home system to fan on would be adequate. I run everything like this.
If you think an individual culture needs more air then try a lid flip and adjust accordingly. Try it side by side if you think there's something to it.

My scissors were way too dull so I ended up using a large cutting mat with a fresh scalpel blade, worked pretty well.
Feeling Quirky, might delete later, lol. Bought these tubs for the occasion and cut up some extra plastic drop clothe, these were my first few cuts/tears and they were nasty but I really enjoyed doing it this way rather than cutting / folding after the fact. I love how clean the clear liners look and these purple 66qts have a way bigger footprint and slightly shorter height than the blue handled ones which I love. No lighting directly over each tub yet but I hope they turn out well and thanks for the tek!!

I don't currently use liners either, but if I could get them premade like this, I'd probably change my tune. Where do you get them?

I cut like 20, or so, at a time and use em as needed. Each set of 4 is only 4 cuts. It's not the longest step, cutting liners, when spawning a dozen tubs. It's worth the effort. More specifically my scissors are fine tip pruning snips.
