ID request, lactarius
    #27395388 - 07/20/21 04:19 PM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Found these growing in a mixed forest in ny along with a tone of trumpets. No brown staining noticed so possibly Lactifluus hygrophoroides? Still inexperienced with lactarius so any help is appreciated.

This is a species that hasn't been named yet - you'll find it in your field guide under the name Lactifluus hygrophoroides, but that species doesn't occur outside of Europe.

Well that’s really interesting. Safe to assume its ok to eat then?

Gyms mail out tomorrow btw.

Yes, it's good to eat.  Everything in Lactifluus is edible if it's not spicy.

I can't wait to study the gyms!

I probably eat more L. hygrophoroides than any other other mushroom. They love mossy banks of small streams, which is where I often hunt, and they fruit for a long time too.

Learn Your Land has a good video on them and a similar species.

Awesome, I’m excited for a new abundant edible to try! Thank you both for your help! I just watched that video last night, it was good one.  I stumbled on a bunch in really good condition, on a hillside like you said with moss, when most other stuff has been buggy.  Planning on trying them for the first time tonight, got any special recipes or just the normal fry in butter?

Yeah, I've never done anything special with them. I usually add butter at the end so it doesn't burn, using oil only first. They're pretty good; I like the texture.

These are my first of the year (17th):

New genus Lactifluus.

The sparse gills are a key id feature for L. hygophoroides.
