    #26386012 - 12/16/19 08:48 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

So I'm trying the whole brown rice broke boi tek. I have my rice sterilized in my jars. I mixed in a handful of vermiculite. Does this look like it should moisture wise?

It's not mush, so I'm guessing it's fine

Some people tend to obsess over getting the "perfect" moisture level. In reality, there's a range of moisture levels that will work. Some will promote faster colonization while others will slow things down, but many will work and you'll get a feel for the ideal moisture content based on your particular setup as you gain more experience. The vermiculite gives you a bit of a buffer too as it can help to both retain moisture and absorb excess moisture.  :goodluck:

Shit got trichy. I moved on to oats which are easier to work with.

Try barley if you like oats. Wheat is my fave.

:whathesaid: I used WBS for 4 years, Oats for another 4, and I've been using red winter wheat for the past year and it has been glorious. I would say it rivals Rye Berries as far as look, consistency, and mycelium growth. Never looking back.

Wheat is smaller than rye although a little harder. I find everything, besides Milo and Millet, preps very well with a boiling hot bucket soak. Using brewers bags you can drain quick n easy before screen drying.

The price point for wheat isn't too bad either. It's the same price as whole oats here. And I agree, I have tons of Milo and Millet just chilling in buckets cause it was more trouble than it was worth for me. It didn't hydrate as well and failed to stay hydrated for the myc. Fine line between hydrated and mush. I just built a mega screen so I'll def have to look into brewers bags - I have those thin meshed paint bags, that should do just fine as well. Ty QM!:tripping:

Is prep the same as oats? Boil 30min and dry?

Yup, slow simmer for 30-45min. I don't usually bring to a rolling boil. Gentle simmer seems to take it on nicely. IMO, it's exterior is not as tough as that of oats so it's easer to hydrate and also explode if you're not following a good tek. But really not too much diff than oats as far as prep.

I used to boil grain, but bow I like to just boil the water and then let it soak in a lined bucket. This way there is less gas consumption and the stove is cleared for more work.

Do you have to increase your time to make up for the gradual loss of heat or is it roughly the same? I guess you could just smack a lid on it. Either way, that is a smart move. I tried that for oats back when I used em and it didn't take as well, have yet to try for wheat. I got plenty of buckets laying around so it couldn't hurt to try.

There are several tek write-ups. I reccomend about an hour or so for all grains. It will ultimately depend mass, I aim for half a 5gal bucket of cereal then fill completely with boiling water. Anything past like 1.5hr and you'll have to dry it extra on the screen. Dial in your prep.

Makes perfect sense and a half gal would be a good measuring stick to go by. I'll def give this a test, I'd like my burners too. I love to cook so any way I can make a bechamél and grains at the same time is a winning playbook with me. Ty for the tips on that!
