The Guide. A Psilocybin Cubensis B+ grow log 6
#27395010 - 07/20/21 11:38 AM (2 years, 6 months ago) |

Nothing I am doing here is new/my own, I just wanted for years to put together a post that walks even the newest member through how to be successful and where I am currently with cult. Thanks to everyone since 2005 who has helped me, RR, Damion, mushboy, munchauzen, Bod, D3, inocuole, tons of people on the boards.
The Guide
on 6/2 I used 2 500mL media bottles and made the recipe 10g agar, 10g LME, and 500mL water and pressure cooked for 30 minutes at 15PSI, everything is done using a SAB

6/8 I made plates where I used prepackaged sterile applicators and swabbed a B+ print sent to me in 2015 to 10 plates while snapping the swab off in plate #10.

6/18 I then took wedges from plate 10 and transferred to 6 more plates
I made a third and final set of transfers before moving to jars
Around 7/1 I used Bod's Easy AF Oat prep tek and placed 8 wedges into jars (this is my favorite way to do grains and I spent a decade using RR's rye berry tek so trust me) https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24126032 ;

Jars were around 30% colonized on 7/14 and were shook, this was 7/16

This was 7/19

On 7/20 4 of my 8 jars were ready so I broke them up and used 2 jars of spawn to 2 jars of substrate using damion5050's bucket tek( https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595#11916595 ) and sterilite shoebox sized containers, something I learned from Munch

Here is the original plate #10 today, fruiting a mushroom right from the tip of the applicator, the plate where this all began.

Here is my elaborate grow set up. 2 shoeboxes with a desk lamp and 6500K bulb pointing down at it off the side of my gaming pc. I put directly into fruiting conditions(basically throw the light on for 12 hours a day

The next step is wait for these 4 other jars to colonize this week and continue doing grain to grain transfers as well as keep doing agar transfers so I have tissue at the ready.
I had time so I did the write up now, I will update when everything starts to fruit.
Fruits 8/7
The 3 tubs did similarly. I slowly harvested mushrooms off them as soon as their veils tore so this is what is going on currently.

Each of the 3 tubs produced 1 ounce dry from first flush. Dunked all 3 8/12 and will wait for next flushes.

So are G2G transfers or agar wedges easier in the end?¿

I think this is somewhat subjective, and your personal setup and goals will dictate the best direction.
Agar is best if you're starting from spores and want to isolate genetics for a good grow. (Same with cloning an existing grow)
G2G is best to increase the amount of spawn you have without needing to isolate new cultures.
I'm pretty sure G2G is also faster simply due to the amount of inoculation points.
But space is a big consideration. You won't want to g2g 8 jars in an SAB, that would be hell, you could mess with 8 agar dishes in that amount of space though.

I predict some trouble with your spawn there prepH, consider doing a2g and just spawning those, I suspect that g2g'ing those is going to create some issues.

What makes you think that? Smells good, broke up great, made another tub today I think it's golden.
I never put all the eggs in one basket though, I plan to do more wedges anyway

I could be wrong, just based on the pics. I trust that you got your show under control, I can't help but comment on spawn pics.
Looking forward to seeing your grow.

How many wedges can you get off a plate? With G2G you can turn 1 jar into 1000's (from what I've seen in the movies).

You can get more than you need off a plate, cutting a wedge the size of a grain of rice gives you tons to work with.

I harvested a good amount of mature mushrooms the last 4 days off the 3 tubs before the photo today, it turned out great and I have 4 more shoeboxes colonizing too with more B+.

Thanks for your detailed posts and continued updates! I started my first ever B+ / Golden Teach Pf-Tek grow on 6/12 right about when you started this grow, so it's been great to watch and compare progress. I'm into my second flush now, and getting ok results for cakes, but nothing like this of course!
I'm definitely trying agar and bulk substrate for my second grow. What seemed daunting 2 months ago now looks like just a another process step, and actually eliminates a lot of hassles. I already have 2 test plates going from my first-ever spore print. I cheated and bought pre-poured plates, will learn to do that the right way eventually. I found a local source of horse oats, cheap! One of the brands shown in BOD's tek.

The run still is not over, I wanted to show my new largest mushroom I have ever grown or even seen, thing is like the side of my forearm, I didn't realize until I started tugging at it that it wrapped around the whole tub!

5.05 grams dry

Just wanted to say thanks again for the inspiration to move past PF-Tek. My first 11 (!!!) shoeboxes of Clone->Agar->Oats->Bulk are just starting to pin. Looks like the are going to be AMAZING. I lost one oat jar to contam, and I suspect it was from the plate I transferred off. It had a little green spot just starting on the far side of the plate, must have spread it's spores around. Lesson learned.
I used mostly BOD's Teks for prep, and then ShaperDreaming's Shoebox Tek for spawning, both to the letter.
I'm also running ONE shoebox full of Uncle Ben's, just because I was curious, I had a spare MS syringe with no other plans, and I'm the type of person where if you tell me the stove is hot, I have to touch it and see for myself. I had no expectations, but used the best sterile technique I could. 2 of the 4 UB bags were grossly contamed and were trashed after opening, the other 2 bags were combined with CVG, spawned to a shoebox and are doing well so far.
But the once you have the equipment, Oat jars and agar are clearly WAY cheaper to run and far more reliable. 50 lbs of oats costs $20 and is enough to make 120 shoeboxes. 17 cents per shoebox. After the contams, took me 4 bags of pre-cooked rice to make one shoebox - $8 per shoebox. Almost 50 times more expensive.
For other newbs like me to reference, these are the Teks I used:
BOD's SAB Tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23990888 BOD's Agar Tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023 BOD's Oat Prep Tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24126032 Spitball's CVG recipe: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20469910 BOD's Coir Prep Tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24077162 SFF Shoebox Assembly Tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662

Awesome! Do you have any suggestions on anything in the original post that is a gap in people's/your knowledge that may help in the future?
I eventually will update this with how I make my lids which are stupid simple(using USPS priority mail envelopes cut into discs as a filter to cover a hole punched through your lid, easy as it gets!)
I wanted to make the guide that I wish I had in 2009 to skip over the pf-tek completely for new cultivators. I showed this to a friend of mine and he said it filled in holes in his understanding of the cultivation process which is what I want.
Thank you for your posts it means a lot!

What I found helpful about this thread was that it extracted some key steps from the more detailed Teks and summarized them in an easy to follow sequence. It helped connect the different Teks together for me.
As a newb, one thing I struggled with is that I'd find a great Tek for say, making agar plates, or prepping grain, but I'd be missing knowledge of key steps to tie the different Teks together, for example:
- How to transfer spores from a print to an agar plate
- How to clone from a fruit to agar
- How cut wedges and transfer them to grain jars (where in the culture to transfer from, how big should they be, shake after transfer or not, that sort of thing)
It took a lot of digging in the search engine and reading posts from TC's to get there, and really just some time practicing and experimenting.

So in ShaperDreaming's Shoebox Tek he uses just Coir, I am wondering how do you modify his tek when using CVG instead? Asking for a friend, of course...
Do you mix up the cvg and then squeeze out water until it reaches the 'just under field capacity' shaperdreaming emphasizes in his tek? If one wanted to use this tek for P. Natalensis are there any other changes you all would suggest?

Hey, for each 6qt sized shoebox, I used:
1 quart jar oat spawn (a quart jar 3/4 full-ish = 1 myco-quart) CVG mix consisting of 3 pints coir, 1 pint verm, 1/4 cup Gypsum Topped off with 1 pint plain coir.
Recipe came from here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20469910; Edited my previous post to add it.
Just under field capacity worked fine. I've never grown P. Natalensis, but from what I've read it grows about the same as Cubensis, and in fact it took DNA analysis to confirm they were actually different species.
As far as yields - from my 11 boxes I harvested just over 450g dry. 40g per shoebox. That's a full pound! First flush was 200g, second 150, third 100, still have a few stragglers going in a 4'th flush. I've got my trips covered for the next year or two.

Damn that's awesome, off 8 tubs I think I got somewhere around 16-18 ounces, way more than I really expected. What I noticed too is the last 4 tubs ended up doing better and I paid less attention to them, opened them less and they seemed to have done better so with these shoeboxes I guess the hands off approach is best.
I plan to update this more and make it a guide someone brand new can just follow piece by piece instead of having to pull from different threads, I'm just doin that for them

I am the newbie who you told me to check your link in your signature out it might help me but what do I do if I only have 1 or 2 good jars? Would I do the method how I soak them in a bag for up to 24hrs then put them in a fruiting tub thing or should I do a casing thing
-------------------- New to this world just have 1 grow under my belt and luckily it went by fairly easy with little to no problems and got to experience my first trip with something I grew ! Completely fell in love with this
. Still really new even though a lot more educated on things but still would love peoples feedback and too keep learning

I would let them fully colonize and do what is called a "grain 2 grain" to make more spawn jars. You can turn one jar into 10 and keep expanding.
Follow exactly what I did in the first post when you're ready to fruit jars. Buy a bucket, verm, coir and make the bulk substrate (bucket tek)
I prefer having 10-20 spawn jars before spawning to bulk and fruiting them to get mushrooms though.
You could do that with just 1-2 jars you have but then you're back at square one with spores afterward
