 Tobacco growing

so today i was at the smoke shop and i ask the owner if he has any tobaccy seeds for sale and he goes on a large trip about how its illegal to grow tobacco, yet he owns a shop and all these other manufacturers grow it. Now, this confuses me in that if you look on the internet theres all sorts of tobacco seeds for sale and no mention of it being unlawful to cultivate it. So what the hell is going on can i legally grow tobacco or not?

I had never heard it was illegal to grow tobacco, perhaps it might be illegal to grow a large amount, sort of like how distilling in the home is illegal or something like that. I really have no idea though.

Everyone i know says its illegal, but at this site and others iv only heard its legal so i dun know... But im from Canada..

It's not illegal in the USA but there are restrictions on how much you can grow. It varies from state to state. My state's law indicates that I cannot grow over 50 plants. Try asking here: http://www.coffinails.com/forums/

Shit i didnt even look into that and i have 18 plants, im just making a few cigars, cant hurt nobody.

im from the south and growing up there use to be acres of it but ya don't see it like ya use to, sure there are still feilds of it around and in september tractors going up and down the road full of the greenery, but peeps selling there land off as they get older and what-not but illegal, thats a new one on me, peace Gypsy

I would Have more then 2, make your time more worth while and have enough to last a year and some to pass around, because afterall good homemade cigars are for sharing!

I bought 3 videos on growing tobacco (not worth the money by the way) and one of them has this famous cuban cigar roller showing you how to roll your own cigars. It seems like an involved procedure but can't be too difficult.
Are you growing seperate strains for the leaf and filler?

Yep i have havanna and jasmine and a filler and monte's growing in the shaded part of my garden as a light wrap, all from seedman.com Only problem is i started them under a 70w hps on 24/7 so they all went into flower so i have 10 2' flowering plants with minimal leaf. I'd prpbaby only have 10 lbs total. But i just put out 5 montes that i had kept indoors and put them under 18/6 for about 2 weeks. They shouldnt go into flower hopefully. Im just going to let the jasmines finish flowering, collect the seeds from the largest 2 and harvest what i can. I already tried braking off the flowering tops but then the lower growth just comes out with even more tops, then if i top them the lower leaves on that branch will throw out even more flowers, so i just gave up.
