you can do it from seed. there are a billion sites about bonsai out there. basically just cut back the new long growth, and keep it trim. repot and trim the roots every year. you can grow nearly anything as bonsai. i never thought of it, but mimosa hostilis would make a great bonsai. i think i may try this out as well. right now i'm growing a little maple tree as bonsai, and want to expand my collection.

Buying already grown trees and training is the cheap way. Seed is the most "professional" then wild harvesting, and then mounding of dirt around a tree so it produces "suckers" that can be harvested and turned into bonsais.
All one has to do is keep it in a fast draining soil, wire it into the pot, trim the roots before the beginning of a new growth cycle, repot, prune new growth and get special bonsai wire that can be used to bend and train branches.
There's many many avid bonsai artists out there with some amazing trees. There are also many styles of bonsais too, i have a paper somewhere that lists them... it's quite an art where one measures tree size - height and width, pot size, the angle to which it leans, if it leans, etc... quite an array of things to do.

i guess i should add that the key with trimming roots is to consider the root like the upside down part of the tree. There are meristems.
The goal in bonsai (prounced bone-sigh) is that you have few large roots and many small roots with root hairs, so to do that you simply chop off the meristems (the very tip) of a root and it will branch out just like topping a plant will. So the goal year after year is to get as many fine roots as possible and not as many huge thick ones.

Go to the library and look it up in the gardening section. I found some good books that way.

your bonsai knowledge is impressive. However, the most preferred traditional method would be to harvest from nature. That is how come we see pics of bonsai over a hundred years old.

Actually you're right, the ones they pick off the rocks in the mountains and stuff... i was mainly thinking of the american bonsai clubs as they always tout starting from seed and wild harvesting of tiny saplings or suckers as second rate, but true wild harvesting off the rocks in the mountains is preferred. I'll correct myself and clarify.

I was lucky enough to train (bonsai pro's train amateurs traditionally) under this bad ass old man who had trained under another master in Japan. Lots of fun bonsai is.
