Shoebox contamination
    #27377122 - 07/07/21 01:48 AM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Help. I have a problem. I have had a few shoebox that have been total air tight sealed. Mycelium starts to grow on the top of the substance, but all of a sudden I get green mould on top. I am have tried brown rice and pop corn but same results. Is my problem that there is no gas exchange in the shoeboxes

By the way they were from agar.

Shoeboxes by design has a non-airtight lid so I bet your contamination is from your spawn.

It seems to grow ok in the jars on rice or popcorn.

Post pictures of your agar and jars if you have them so we all can see.

I scrapped the top cover of substitute yesterday and replaced the top layer with a new casing. I know not ideal but I was in a mood at discovering the green mould.

There isn`t a real chance to save a tub by cutting out mold.
You`ll just spread it around.
You just removed on top, but there will be more hidden inside.
Describe your whole process from the start

1.Had a spore print and put it to agar.
2. Put agar to sterile brown rice.
3. Pasteurised some coir and Verm.
4. Mixed 1:2 spawn to sub
5. Put casing top level on
6. Tin foil on top.
7. Put lid on box
8. Day 12 removed lid and took off tin foil off and lid put back on.
9. Day 14 see green mould on top of casing layer.

I think personally that I need to pressure cook my coir so that’s totally sterile.

So there`s some outdated technique in there.
That foil is absolutely not needed.
Also no need to pressure cook coir, if you have coir bricks,
they`re already extremely heat-treated and come contam resistant,
as they have low to zero nutrients.
You say casing, you mean just a top layer of coir, or something else?

Thinking about it. I think my problem is not cleaning the spores through several transfers of mycelium to a agar.

Transfer smaller pieces next time.
The smaller the better

I think my problem is from the start of the process. I used mostly spores(print) straight to agar then transferred to grain.
I should have cleaned the agar up a few times before before the transfer.
