I'm currently doing the neglect tek, and i wanted to know if an LED Light would work well.

from what i know, led could be ideal for shroom growing, assuming you have corrrect wave length and enough light strnegth (usually measured in lux, but in led its measured in candala).
youll have to look up in the literature for what wave length and what strnegth you want your led to be, and i quite think youll need an array of leds rather then just 1. In the book by Paul Stamets The Mushroom Cultivator, there are light requirements for several mushrooms species. Also in his newer book called Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms.
If you want i can check it for you when i get home. But be aware that i dont know of anyone who tried gtrowing with leds, so this is quite experimental. I plan on building an array for mushrooms, as soon as its done ill post here my results.
The good thing about leds is that they dont generate any heat (or very little of it). Also they release a light of very specific wave length, and not like a lamp which emits light in various wave lengths.
I know for sure though that you'd want light in the blue spectrum for mushrooms growth

trade_om, do you have a book or the knowledge of what the wavelength(es) that are used?

i'm really interested in this.

i asked this very question in another site, and they didnt know either haha.

i would expect a white LED to work fine, because all a white led's are is layers of colors blened to make white. Im sure they put out the right light to produce, i would be surprised if they dont

but it would be more efficient to have all the light energy concentrated into one wavelength... what would this do anyway, just make them grow straight, or does more of the right wavelength increase yield?

Growth parameters for Psilocybe Cubensis from The Mushroom Cultivator:

Primordia Formation:

Relative Humidity: 95-100%
Air Temperature: 74-78f
Duration: 6-10 days
CO2: less than 5000 ppm
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1-3 per hour.
Light: Diffuse natural or exposure for 12-16 hours/day or grow-lux type flourescent light high in blue spectra at the 480 nanometer wavelength.

Cropping:

Relative Humidity: 85-92%
Air Temperature: 74-78f
CO2: less than 5000 ppm
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1-3 per hour.
Flushing Pattern: Every 5-8 days
Harvest Stage: When the cap becomes convex and soon after the partial veil ruptures.
Light: Indirect natural or same as above.

I think a 470nm blue LED will do the trick, its only 10nm off the ideal, and there is a bit of a wavelength distribution, and I am sure the shrooms at not  that  fussy.

Personally, I use a gravitionally stabilized hydrogen fusion furnace as my light source

The LED, an electronics hobby supplier, Radio Shack or something like that. Or Xmas tree lights.

The other one, you will find in the sky most days

Try here, they have very bright led's at a decent price. They also have a uv led, maybe add that with the blue....

i thought UV was bad?

can you increase potency/yield with the right light, or is it just used to tell the myc to fruit?

I got a few typical white LEDs hooked up in my incubator (they're really alot brighter than i had thought they would be...) ill post the results in a few weeks, as i inoccd a few days ago. I lined my incubator in aluminum foil to help reflect the light, though i wouldnt do this if i wasn't doing the neglect tek...

Wouldn't it be better to use a battery with an LED?

A 9V battery, or a D cell should provide enough light from an LED to grow shrooms for months.

i just hooked up a flashing blue (475nm wavelength) and green (505nm wavelength), they are both high intensity leds, like 15 bucks worth for both but they are nice and bright...
they do get slight ambeint light (when i check on em) so it isnt the best indicator but my cakes in there are currently knotting up nicely... no primordia yet tho but theyve only been birthed 4days
i can try scan a copy of the schematic im using lemme know if ur interested
also i forgottt.. what psilomonkey ses is true, i have data sheets for both of the leds and they specify the range of frequency deviation - so for the blue led wavelength = 470 +-35nm and for green
wavelength = 505nm +-30nm
when i just had the green and left them for a week by accident there were shroomies but the caps were mega pale... so just the other day i added the bluey.. yet to conduct a tru neglect experiment yet:)
but i swear by these babies as the best way to raise lush mush
they use almost no power, and circuits designed well for em can run for seriously long times off batterys and drain very low power from the mains if run through a transformer
an electronix store will stock a nice range - most important is to pick up one that has a high light output rating (usually in mcd)
mine are v.high output - 1800mcd in blue and 3500 mcd in green (a standard led like the flashy red light for ya computa harddrive has an intensity of 5-10mcd)
good luck with it!
