Anybody know if you can pasteurize or sterilize in a dry oven or does it need to be pressurized with water vapor. Would something like a heat treat oven for metal work for large scale runs?

Dry heat will dry out and burn the grains.

Dry heat doth not sterilize like steam.

Yes it does, provided it gets to the material since it lacks the inherent penetration of pressurized steam. I oven sterilize my glass petri dishes for example and we flame sterilize our tools. It just dries out and burns organic material because that's what hot air do. Impossible to expose wet grain or coir to 250f hot air without drying out and scorching it.

Hey all, and especially p9:grin:

In answer toi the age-old question, "How's it hangin?"

22 cups of white millet [7 more jars plus the last cup for the jar in the freezer]
in a paint strain bag
hanging from the grab bar in the shower with a killer clamp

Shall I leave it soak until I get back from The Babe's tonight or can I leave it to drain in that until 10ish when I will jar it. Also, since this method assures that millet doesn't escape and make a big fucking mess, is the 20-minute recommended soak good or should I lengthen it for the large hanging mass. :um:

Also, can the millet jars sit out on the counter from 5:00pm untiol 5 am or does that fuck the TEK?

If you got a link to this via PM, please forgive me, but I need to address this before I  bugout for her dugout.

As ever,

TIYA

Drying time isn't necessary, you can load right away or let it sit overnight if you want, either is good. That's just what I do and I'm a stickler for detail. I let it sit for 20 mins to drain because I'm busy prepping my work area, jars, etc.

Don't overthink it, brother.

 'overthinking' could be one of my names. then again at $2/lb there's more riding on getting it right than for oats at 30ȼ/lb.

I have deep gratitude.

If I don't provide dinner it will be sad times. I'll let it hang til I get home and then jar it to PC in the AM. Meanwhile I can defrost the 2 jars in the freezer.

Thanks again.

Hey P9 i have made some millet bags with your tek and have some questions...

I soaked 2kg of millet and then the bag was 2.6kg, so 600 grams of water, thats like 400 less than what i would have used with no prep. Do you think thats ok? Have you weighed them before and after soaking?

Anyways some G2g i do to them are doing well , do you shake the millet bags just like jars for speed up colonization?

Just lost 6 bags to what must've been contaminated LC, not sure if it got in during the initial inoculation or while I was pouring but whatever. All my other bags are going strong but those 6 bags I inoculated with a Mak LC are showing first signs of green. Big disappointment, lesson learned and will be testing from now on.

How many days do I need to give the test plate before I can be sure it's clean? I'm gonna be dipping a loop into the LC and then streaking.

Been having trouble reading the conditions on my monotubs and adjusting accordingly… seems like my monotubs just get downright soaked with moisture even when i put it straight to what I assume is “high FAE conditions”. While it’s colonizing, even if I have the lid cracked pretty decently and a fan on in the room, the tub will get downright soaked to the point where the lid drips water and needs to be wiped daily, and outside the liner the tub will fill with like an inch of water or so. Below you will see a picture of one of my modded tubs, this tub has had its lid cracked and slightly ajar in addition to the FAE holes.

Then, when I start fanning with the lid to encourage the evaporation of this shitton of water and hopefully get pins, I manage to dry out my substrate and abort my dank pinset. This happens when I do unmodded or the standard 6 hole monotub. Below you will see a picture of a tub that has been in the same room as the other tub, only this tub is unmodded and is already fruiting.

I’m under the impression that you increase FAE during the fruiting stage and are supposed to have low FAE in the beginning. Yet my shit gets ridiculously soaked in the beginning, seemingly requiring more FAE to reduce humidity, only to dry up as if the fruiting stage now has too much FAE. If anyone has simple advice or tips to de-noob my process please let me know.

stop trying to forcefully evaporate the surface with fanning.

I think opening fae after it's colonized is because it's easier to read the myc at that point and you won't over shoot your fae. Only make small increments with a day or 2 to evaluate how it takes it. When i see a tub like your picture #2, i see some fuzz that's gone down, no condensation, and many aborts; I think you're overshooting your fae or too much change too fast.

Rather than fanning i more so just open the tub and stick my hand in there to see how hot / stuffy it is, then I leave it off for like 20 seconds or so until it feels normal temp in the tub. I feel that’s worth mentioning, considering I have bruised a tub from trying to vigorously fan and mist it.

I suppose I need more holes in the tub then, but I still don’t get how I’m expected to increase FAE during pinning and fruiting, since the tub seemingly dries up more from my standard FAE when there is fruits than when there is just colonizing sub.

One of the biggest breakthroughs I had was just leaving my tubs alone.

I think constantly changing conditions stunt growth much more than a sub optimal but constant environment.

I was chewing on this the other day. I have seen shit pop up in plates two weeks from pour. So im thnking that with LC we really jst have to have bomb sterile technique, which is what everyone says about it.
