Flow hood contamination
    #27377491 - 07/07/21 11:11 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone I’ve just joined here and been reading a lot and have 7 successful mono tub grows under my belt,I’ve been using agar quite effectively in my SAB,recently I switched to a flow hood and my contamination rate has sky rocketed in front of my flow hood, what’s the deal here ? I’ve been using no pours in my SAB and all of a sudden in front of my flow hood everything I worked on has gone to shit any advise and I’m new so I’m not sure how to post pictures

How'd you build the flowhood?

Got a link to the one you bought? Might not be the right micron rating. Might have too weak of a flow for your procedure.

Okay so you don't know what the filter is rated at?
I went as far as to download what I guess is their catalog and all I could find was
"A Laminar Flow Cabinet offers a localised clean air solution which can operate up to Class 5 of ISO 14644-1:2015."

I'm not familiar with UK standards or whatever.

Did yours come with a speed controller?

And unless you can figure out what the micron size is on it well... your just hoping. It needs to be equal to or less than .3 micron and be 99.9 or 99.97 % efficient or something like that

It’s a h14 hepa filter and it is designed to filter out 99.995% of partials down to 0.1 microns

I thought I saw the airflow rate earlier and it seemed fine. Does it have a speed controller?

Your best bet rn is to make agar plates and test them in front of the hood. Make plates, open them in front of the hood, no inoculation. It will tell if your flow hood is clean.
You could make a no pour agar plate and don't even touch it after to make sure its not your PC

I’ve done that today, and that is what I use for my agar the no pour tek ,been doing so for a long time in Sab and had around 80-85% success rate

So you made a control plate and opened a plate in front of your hood? Well I guess you wait a couple weeks to find out... maybe use your Sab until then.

Did you do a lighter test of the flow rate? Too slow without side walls could be an issue things could fall in, too fast could be an issue especially depending on what's around you, could have things sucked in.

Lighter test done and it works perfectly,I lit a incense stick and smoke blew nice and smooth in a near perfect straight line

Explain the process of your petri prep
From before it gets in the PC until it's inoculated.
Are you keeping your hood on until you repackage the petris?

Did you let it run for around 48hrs before using it and do you let it run for an hour or so when you use it? Also, if you HVAC unitl completely off when using?

Try raising your work space up on a rack/up off table. watch hands, dish, scalple to make sure not in the flow(interfering with flow).
