Is gypsum obsolete?

Hi,
I came across a post saying "no one uses gypsum anymore". So is gypsum obsolete? TMC? is that also obsolete? What book would you recommend?
Thanks

Some people still do, it's unnecessary. If it's to learn cultivation I'd just use upto date forums and videos, the books contain alot of bad information

Never used gypsum, never will. One less thing to buy. If you get the water content in your grain correct then gypsum is completely unnecessary IMO. Ive had super consolidated jars still break up beautifully with a little love. And thats one the rare occasion that you even let your jars go that long.

Along the same topic, I use gypsum and instant coffee mix and have always had great jars. Maybe I'll experiment without that mixture and see how I do. It's one added step that I'd like to avoid. As for how long to let the mycelium procreate in the jar, I've used lightly inoculated spawn jars and completely white jars that need a lot of breaking up. Aside from a bit of a slow start with the lightly-inoculated jars, I've not noticed much other difference. That is mainly with Maitake and Shitake.

Thanks for getting back to this. I'm assuming shroomery is probably my best knowledge base. I'll pass on ordering that book then.

I use a little bit to stop grains from sticking together but I also use bigger amounts when I spawn to bulk in order to boost yields.

Yeah just spend your time here, for free, and you will get MUCH more actual usable, up to date info than you would from Stamets old ass books

Wait, so just to be clear...are we talking Gypsum in sub or gypsum in spawn? Or both?

I just did 100 bags with gypsum plus g2g jars. Did another 50 without this week. I'll see post results on clumping. I find it makes it harder to see whispy mycelium like LM anyways.

I was interested to know about gypsum in sub. Are commercial growers still using it? What does it do? Increase the yield or just general quality of the fruit? Or nothing much?

In the substrate, the general consensus here is not much. But some may disagree.

Do you have a source on gypsum being of no benefit to yield in mushrooms?
I have been using it for years because of information from RR but if there's a reliable source on it not being of any benefit to yield then I'm happy to ditch it.

The source is experience or hearing people's anecdotes. The source is the search engine. I've got plenty of pictures of cubes growing in tubs without gypsum doing just fine. Grow oysters with a 1:20 spawn to substrate ratio and maybe gypsum plays a bigger role. Try things out yourself.

Try it and come to your own conclusion. Some people say it makes a difference some people don't. I don't think it makes a lick of difference and skip em

Just put my first jar to spawn with the CVG recipe. I've seen BOD's tek of simply using coir. I've already bought the vermiculite and gypsum, so I figure I'll use it and see how it goes. I'll be checking back here to find out what Troy finds on his big grow!

Hopefully he will reply. Hasn't been around in 20 days and posted about this 5 months ago.
Sometimes people notice a huge difference in performance between coir and CVG. They tend to be new and one grow did well and one didn't. But they refuse to believe one wasn't healthy due to pride or ignorance. This is a bunch of threads in the psychedelic section
