How I get down with a stack of plates * 8
    #26847430 - 07/27/20 08:59 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

If you've ever poured a sleeve of plates and dreaded having to wrap each individual plate or stuff them back into their sleeve, etc, you may find this as handy as I do.

I pour my plates as per usual, I then allow them to "defrost" like you would a frost covered windshield, except it's condensation instead of frost and the air is blown by my flowhood as apposed to a heater. 30 mins one side, rotate for another 30 on the other, they come out crystal clear despite the pour temperature (the hotter the pour, the longer it takes).

If using a SAB just let them sit for a few hours with the arm holes covered until the condensation clears, then wrap.

After the plates are sufficiently cleared of condensation I wrap an entire stack in one go with a roll of cling wrap:

Finished product:

To free up the desired number of plates for use: just cut around the bottom of the last plate that you need, be sure to support the bottom of the last plate as you take it off the stack or the bottom will fall off. I usually insert the scalpel blade under the final dish to be removed horizontally, spin the stack and then lift the plates off with my left hand,  while my blade holds the bottom plate on until I get a finger or two under there.

I like this. Would placing them in front of a fan instead of a flow hood work just as well or is it high risk of contaminating the plates? Is it even likely that a closed plate will contaminate? A lot of people don't even wrap their plates until after inoculation but I’ve been paranoid and wrap them all anyway.

Just leave them unwrapped in your SAB, don't put them in front of a dirty ol fan.

The problem is, my SAB has to be mobile. I have to be able to work and then tear everything down and put it away. I have 2 nosy children that like to ask questions.

But thanks, "dirty old fan" answers my question. πŸ‘

What do you do with the plates that you poured but are not inoculating immediately? Put them in the fridge or on a shelf at room temp? How long will they last?

I sit them on a shelf. I've had them sit for 2 months or so. I'm sure they could sit indefinitely.

Hey...! That really works good... Thanks for that....

20 minutes Is all It took me to eliminate all the condensation..

Finally someone came up with a good solution to clear up the frosty dishes..  :bow2:

Why didn't I think of that.. Ha..!

Once inoculated you have to use something that can breathe like parafilm.

Are you saying that my cling wrap doesn't breathe?

Genius.

I usually make plates for when I am doing transfers so after they cool, I do transfers(sab) and then parafilm. I store them stacked in a camera bag type cd case and the condensation goes away after a day.

Wrapping plates with cling wrap isn't an issue, it's common practice.

It breathes just fine, I (and many others) have been doing it for many years.

This is a game changer. I like to have some plates in advance, in case something clone worthy pops up. Parafilming a whole sleeve gets annoying quick...

Yeah, wrapping individual plates isn't the way to go. Lot's of people seem to like putting the plates back in the sleeve but I find it to be cumbersome.

I tried putting a whole poured stack back in the sleeve and found it stressful thinking I could knock it over and ruin my work or contaminate something in the process.  This looks to be the perfect solution!  Thanks for the great suggestion.
